I’ve wondered how much our players make for a long time, and I could never find the info anywhere! Thanks for showing us. I’d also like to know about how long each player’s contract is and whatnot. Do you know how we’d be able to find out? In an ideal world, I’d like to be able to make a graph for DCU like this one for the Caps over at Japers’ Rink.

hmm...
bargain bin— Pontius, Najar, Hamid, Graye, Christman, King, James, Pena
about right— Q, Wallace, Jacovic, Burch
overpaid— Moreno (pains me to say), Perkins, Morsink,
WTF— Allsopp (considering his production and the fact that he’s essentially been the same player as Christman)
TBD— Hernandez, Bosko, Zayner (would like to see him make the field before making 20K more than starters)
Overall, nice to be past the days of 10K salaries…

I’d swap out Morsink for Talley, but otherwise looks about right.
Hasta siempre Jaime.

Hamid and Najar
= two of the biggest “moneyball” contracts in MLS this season.
Win or lose, we will always be here for you.

I see this list and wonder, why on earth would any european player come over here for those wages?

Hey! Bosko gets paid over half a million… yeah. That’s chump change compared to European leagues. Oh well. Marquee Europeans are profitable in the short term for MLS, but aren’t the biggest part of long-term improvement of American soccer.

Juan Manuel Pena
If I had a career that allowed me the luxury of being able to retire at age 37, there’s no way I’d come out of retirement for just $40,000.

Yeah, I was shocked that he was making the minimum
I figured it was around $100,000.

A reader just pointed out to me that he was listed previously (in June) at $116,500. But is now listed at $40,000.
Mistake? Type? Or did he negotiate a pay cut in return for the team listing him as questionable every week for the remainder of the season…?

Goff answers this
But the club also quietly reduced a portion of the payroll by presenting an ultimatum to Bolivian defender Juan Manuel Peña: Accept a pay cut or possibly face waivers. In deciding to stay with United, Peña saw his base earnings drop from $108,000 to the league minimum of $40,000. (For late arrivals, such as Boskovic and Hernandez, the figures are based on a full year and prorated.)
Because of injuries, Peña has appeared in just 10 of 21 league matches (nine starts). He did not play in any of the four U.S. Open Cup games. A right quadriceps ailment has kept him sidelined since early July and he still can’t strike the ball over distance.
“Juan was on the bubble of playing on a regular basis — starting games, not starting games,” General Manager Dave Kasper said. “He picked up a couple of injuries and we wanted to see how he would respond. The first half of the season, we wanted to make sure he was going to be consistent. To keep him on that salary, we wanted to see consistency. We told him, at this point in time, we needed to adjust his pay.”
United President Kevin Payne said a few weeks ago that he expects Peña, a boyhood friend of D.C. captain Jaime Moreno, to retire.
"I think he is just a joy to watch, he plays every game like there's not going to be one next week for him, like someone's going to take it away from him next game."

European Wages
That’s why we get Henry on the downside of his career (still paid over $5M by RBNY) and not Leo Messi or David Villa (or anyone else on the Barca starting XI !) But to stick up for MLS, we still have good talent over here and, on the whole, the league is more competitive than the big four leagues in Europe where you pretty much know which handful of clubs will be competing for trophies every year. Money doesn’t buy you everything.
