GameThread: San Jose Earthquakes At D.C. United
Tonight, D.C. United will try to do what they haven't done since June 2009 - win consecutive league matches. For the second week in a row, they face a team that appears bound for the playoffs in the San Jose Earthquakes.
Game time: 7:30 PM
Television: CSN+ (Channel 1 on FIOS)
Projected Starting Lineup: As Jaime Moreno gets set to return to the starting lineup in pursuit of recapturing his all-time goals scoring record from Jeff Cunningham, it is the defense that will be a bigger concern for United. The central defensive pairing of Clyde Simms and Jed Zayner may be the worst we've had since the days of Greg Janicki. And yet a similar backline (with Dejan Jakovic in place of Simms) shut out the Colorado Rapids just a week ago. Carlos Varela is likely to get his first start in the midfield with Andy Najar out due to yellow card accumulation.
There's no reason to think that United should win this match. So why do I have this feeling that we're poised for another upset........?

No surprises
The only question going into tonight’s lineup was whether or not Adam Cristman would be ready to make an appearance. The answer apparently is no.

Is Zayner really a better center back than McTavish?
Why switch those two? Zayner hasn’t been outstanding on the left, but he’s found something of a home out there. McTavish has experience playing in the center. The move surprises me.
It would be a great time for Troy to finally play out of his mind.

Double red card
I still don’t see what Moreno did to deserve a card.
If none of the officials had a clear understanding of the initial incident, wouldn’t a better decision have just been a foul on McDonald but no cards?

I'm not watching the game, yet I still feel fully justified in saying
Good lord.

Alex Prus
keeps coming up with new ways to boggle my mind. While he was conferring with the linesman, I ran through several weird options in my head that might be the end result of that situation. A double red was not among them.
Mind you, it worked out to our benefit on the whole. The extra space gave us more room to create chances, SJ had one less attacking player to expose our makeshift back line, and we didn’t have to worry about Jaime trying to make it through 90 minutes. San Jose obviously didn’t care a whit about the outcome. And still, we contrived to lose.

I thought it would work to our benefit too at the time. As it turns out though, even if Prus had only ejected McDonald and Moreno remained in the game, I doubt the final score would have been much different.

DCU game
Was watching the USMNT, turned over to CSN and they were playing a replay of one of the many 2-0 losses this season. Oh… wait, was that a new game?
