Reviving The Bolivian Connection
Reviving the Good Ol Bolivian Connection
We should try to bring in a good Bolivian Prospect...
Why a Bolivian player ?
We have alot of extra cash this off season to lure in quality international players
DC United has a huge Bolivian fan base
Tradition..Two of DC United's greatest players were brought in from Bolivia Echavery & Moreno
Our loyal captain Jamie Moreno can mentor him about life in DC like he was mentored by Echavery
The Bolivian player would feel at home and be happy here with such a large Bolivian population.... it could give him a reason to play harder and raise his game and play for more pride & not just the money
all those reasons would also help us to lure in a higher quality Bolivian prospect too
I say lets take another shot at the Bolivian Connection !!!!

Now's the time!
I like the idea. This could be Moreno’s final season with DC United, so there could be no better time than now to bring in a young Bolivian player for Jaime to take under his wing.

I know that Onalfo was taking a trip to Brazil
We seem to have been more entranced with Brazilians lately with Fred and Emilio, and may feel like there’s an arms race with LA’s trio of young Brazilians. But now Fred and Emilio are both gone, so there wouldn’t be a mentor. Bolivia neighbors Brazil; anybody know if Onalfo plans to stop there as well for a scouting trip?

A good idea that will be hard to execute
I recall Dave Kasper (or maybe Kevin Payne) saying that the Bolivian players that would fit MLS and be stars for us are too expensive due to transfer fees. A good Bolivian player will attract clubs from the rest of CONMEBOL’s clubs, which don’t have MLS rules holding them back.
In an ideal world, I’d like to see it happen. Bolivian players have the Latin flair that is a hallmark of DC United, but are not necessarily as hard to get as guys that start in the Argentine league. The trick is finding a Bolivian player who is out of contract and convincing him that MLS, rather than a move to Argentina, Colombia, Chile, etc, is the best option.

The one thing we’ve got going for us is “the American Dream”. I could see a player choosing to sign with MLS over Argentina or some other league because he wants to settle down and raise a family in the US.

Joaquin Botero… he is only 32 but he would be contender for the MLS scoring title…. dude has that nose for putting the ball in the net
i think his contract is up with the Correcaminos UAT in the Mexican league
here’s a recent video of # 9 Joaquin Botero conneting on 3 goals against ARG

I believe Houston put a discovery claim on Botero last year. Don’t hold me to that, but I recall reading that they were after him before they signed Luis Angel Landin.

Possible trade
I can’t remember anyone ever trading for the discovery rights (which is no guarantee that you can sign your target) for a player, but this is MLS. You can pretty much trade anything for anything.
