Monday Freedom Kicks: Steve Birnbaum, National Hero

We give you all the Steve Birnbaum love we can find, some D.C. United news and John Goodman losing his mind.

It was a relatively quiet weekend kicks wise, then Steve Birnbaum decided he needed to win the United States' game over Iceland because God knows the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year wasn't doing anything, right? Anyway:

Recaps of the win and/or Birnbaum's game-winning goal from usU.S. SoccerESPN FC, the Washington PostMLS and Stars and Stripes FC. Oh, and here's Perry Kitchen (not shown: his American Outlaws DC scarf) saying hi:

With the man of the hour! Great result and big goal from @birnbaum15 #usmnt

Quite a bit of stuff went on Friday night/Saturday in D.C. United land, so lego waffles:

D.C. United concedes early and falls to IF Elfsborg 1-0 in preseason opener - Black And Red United: I've always felt you can sense how a team's season will go by the first preseason game, I hope you do too.

Report: D.C. United is nearing a trade for Colorado Rapids midfielder Marcelo Sarvas - Black And Red United: Funny thing, Marcelo Sarvas followed D.C. United on twitter, so if it hasn't been announced yet, it's official now.

D.C. United interested in Georgios Samaras - Black And Red United: Any time you can burn an international spot on a target striker with a bad back, you gotta do it.

DCAM-16-CS-0074 RFP for Construction Management At- Risk Services for Infrastructure Work in Connection With the DC United Soccer Stadium | dos: This quietly continues to move forward.

Beer League: Free Beer Movement creator imagines every MLS team as a local brew | MLSsoccer.com: I don't think I've had a Right Proper beer, but in case you're open for better local suggestions for D.C., avail yourselves.

Should brands take a closer look at soccer podcasting? | Gilt Edge Soccer Marketing: We think so, at least.

Faltó reacción - Gallos Blancos de Querétaro: Keeping tabs on DC's first opponent of consequence, Queretaro (starting Jonathan Bornstein and Luis Gil in the lineup for the first time) gave up two first-half goals to Santos in quick succession, and those goals stood. The Gallos are in 17th (of 18 teams) after four matches, with their only win coming against 18th place Dorados. They host 15th place Veracruz Friday.

AC Milan 3-0 Inter Milan: The crash of 2016 continues - The Offside Inter Milan: In partner club news, Mauro Icardi missed a penalty for Inter Milan, but the damage had long been done as AC Milan took home the Milan derby with a 3-0 win. Inter has now won one in their last 5, but maybe they're still poaching a Milan player for the Thohir #brand, so who knows?

Finally, to sum up all of the news, gossip, possible comings and goings, here's five minutes of John Goodman yelling in movies:
