GameThread: AC Milan at DC United

The Italian giants AC Milan visit RFK Stadium tonight for a much hyped international friendly against our beloved DC United. DC has a history of not getting embarassed in these sorts of matches. Let's see if they can continue that tradition tonight and gain some momentum to use in league play.

Game time: 8:00pm EST

Television: Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, ATDHE.net

Projected Starting Lineup:

    Hamid
Graye Talley   Pena Wallace
  Simms   King
Najar       Pontius
  Emilio   Quaranta

Last minute thoughts:  Well that wasn't the starting lineup for United that any of us would have expected.  It's great to see names like Chris Pontius and Santino Quaranta back in the starting lineup, but each is playing in a different position from where he started the season. Stephen King will feel the pressure of getting his first start with United in such a huge setting. We will also get to see Luciano Emilio in the first 11 for the first time since 2009, and the two Academy products Bill Hamid and Andy Najar will surely gain some great experience tonight.

This is your place for pre-game, in-game, and post-game thoughts.

At least we can say for certain that DC United are not embarassing themselves…

Hoping everybody gets to see tonight what I’ve seen from James and Rice in the reserve matches

That was quite a game...

AC Milan definitely looked a bit lackadaisical up until that 2nd score- once Allsopp scored they looked a lot more like they were in a meaningful match. But DC played surprisingly crisp and was very focused throughout the game. For once…there wasn’t really a disappointment performance-wise. Barklage’s injury looked terrible and definitely demoralized the team (besides putting it down a man for the last half-hour).

About Rice and James: I have to applaud their individual performances. They stood up well against some classy players, especially Rice. But there was a noticeable drop-off in organization with Pena being subbed out and then Talley. Not that I’m advocating Talley-Pena to be our starting center pairing, but one of them would keep the line in-shape. I did see Rice pointing out spots and directing people, which is good, he just needs more years under his belt.

Stouffer says Jakovic has been upgraded to questionable for Saturday, so that should help. Maybe we see Rice get some more looks in the 18, what have we got to lose?

If Barklage couldn’t buy good luck before, yeesh. Seeing Ben Olsen pat him on the head at the end of the bench, his head in his hands? Damn.

They're coming.

It's incredible how energized I feel after this win

I know it’s just a friendly and doesn’t mean anything, but it’s definitely a far cry from getting outclassed by Madrid last year. Milan definitely looked like the better side, but none of our goals were flukes (well, maybe Allsopp’s). Instead, they were the result of good buildup and well taken chances. We didn’t have to rely on an opposing defense screwing up! I feel so bad for Brandon that he got hurt again (and it looks like his ACL again), but the team showed good grit and determination by holding on for the wild win. Very good games out of all of our defenders, and our goalies as well. Getting back an in-form Pontius and Quaranta will be great, and if Emilio can poach some goals, terrific.

Gotta say, the worst player on the field looked like Jaime. Sad to see it, but he was sooooo slooooooooow.

Great win tonight boys! Hopefully this is a confidence booster that shows what they can do. After all, this is the same team that was the first MLS team to win in Mexico when they beat Santos Laguna. Now, just start winning in the MLS. And on days other than Wednesday. Turn this thing around! VAMOS UNITED!
