Following the stated interest in D.C. United midfielder Luciano Acosta from Paris Saint-Germain (and a rumored tire-kicking by England club Manchester United), now comes word from Turkish outlet Sporx that Acosta’s representatives have begun talks with Fenerbahce. Acosta had previously been mentioned on a list of targets for the club, but this appears to be an escalation, going so far to say that discussions have been moving positively.
This would be the second time in recent memory that D.C. United fans and Super Lig fans shared a mutual interest, as Gary Medel had been talking to D.C. before signing with Besiktas in 2017, and it is obviously known that Acosta (who turns 25 in two months) has dreams of Europe.
All this aside, a move like this does have a scent of leverage to it. D.C. was reported to have offered Acosta $8 million over 4 years, though Black and Red United has learned that United has apparently made an offer north of this. But more than that, Fener has been struggling in this year’s Super Lig season, tied for 13th in the 18-team league, giving them a possible need to impress an unhappy fanbase. Perhaps a move there could be a prelude to a larger move down the road, but Acosta is also aware of the interest surrounding him during the last transfer window as well, and save a similar (or better) offer in the ballpark of PSG’s, his camp could be dipping a toe in the water.
Either way it’s going to be an eventful, anxious time in Southwest D.C. over the next few weeks.
