DC United's long road trip has finally come to an end, and their long-awaited Stadium Opener is finally upon us!
But before I talk Wayne Rooney fitting into a formation, let's talk Whitecaps.
Basically what they try to do is sit back, and once the opposing team gets comfortable attacking, a Whitecap plays a killer ball to Aphonso Davies/Kei Kamara/Yordy Reyna, and the 'Caps start running forward until the play is done.
Then they get a little comfortable in the opposing half before dropping back again.
However, they have trouble defending set pieces. And that's troublesome against DCU, especially with Wayne Rooney playing.
Vancouver conceded two corners late against the Fire. One of them went in, and the other hit the crossbar.
Even the first goal they conceded was on a restart. So expect that to be a factor.
Another thing I noticed about Vancouver was their poor marking.
On the Nemanja Nikolic goal, all of the Whitecap defenders are marking a Fire player, and Nikolic is able to slip into the box unnoticed and punish Vancouver.
On the Chicago corner kick goal, the 'Caps are able to clear the ball, but no one challenges Tony Tchani for the volley. That's just bad defending.
On the Chicago crossbar, the corner's served in, and absolutely no one challenges Jonathan Campbell's header, and he nearly equalized the game because of this.
Now, let's do the lineup!
DC United Projected Starting Lineup vs. Vancouver Whitecaps:
------------------------Mattocks(11)-------Rooney(9)---------------------
Asad(22)-------------Acosta(10)-------Arriola(7)-----------Stieber(18)
Mora(28)----------Brillant(13)------Birnbaum(15)-------Robinson(20)
----------------------------------------Ousted(1)--------------------------------
Paul Arriola should be fit for this one after coming off the bench last week and racking up an assist.
Everyone's wondering who of the attacking midfielders should be dropped to include Mattocks in the starting lineup, as they are all in top form. Simple solution: Drop the d-mid! Canouse isn't 100% yet, so he could come off the bench for Asad (who's gotten many minutes and is probably tired) to protect a late lead and then move Stieber to the left flank, Arriola to the right, and have Acosta stay centrally while moving Canouse to d-mid.
Now, the moment you've been waiting for, the unveiling of my Audi Field Opener Prediction!
This Vancouver attack looks scary, but their defense isn't exactly the greatest one out there.
Same for us, but we've got Wazza and they don't!
4-2 us, Rooney brace, Mattocks, and a Stibi free kick.
Can't wait for the match!
