After a raft of games were cancelled at the NCAA level recently, teams have been back out for their spring exhibition games and have featured a number of former D.C. United academy players.
Tyler Rudy named Georgetown Captain
First up, some good news for Georgetown midfielder Tyler Rudy, a graduate of the Black-and-Red's academy. The junior has been named as one of the Hoyas' three captains for the 2014 season, alongside goalkeeper Tomas Gomez and Keegan Rosenberry. Rudy has made 65 appearances on the Hilltop and has scored five goals. It has been something of an interrupted spring season for Georgetown so far, with their latest game against UMBC over the weekend cancelled due to the weather.
Virginia sneak past North Carolina 1-0
One game to survive the poor conditions was between Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday, although it was forced to be moved to Ukrop Park in Richmond away from its original venue of Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers, featuring former United players Patrick Foss, Marcus Salandy-Defour and Sean Murnane, beat the Tar Heels 1-0.
Maryland return from spring tour of England
Over their spring break, Maryland's men's soccer team went on tour in England, travelling to Manchester and London and playing academy teams from Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur. Featuring Black-and-Red academy graduates Sulianman Dainkeh, Mikias Eticha, Cody Neidermeier and Michael Sauers, the Terrapins have since returned from their journey across the Atlantic. Unfortunately, their spring fixture against the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL PRO over the weekend was cancelled due to the weather.
Duke spring game with High Point cancelled
It could have been the game that saw former D.C. United academy players Nat Eggleston and Kody Palmer collide, playing for Duke and High Point respectively in a spring exhibition game scheduled for March 29. Unfortunately, due to the impending weather that was about to hit the area, the game was cancelled and a make-up date has not been announced. Eggleston and the Blue Devils may face another Black-and-Red academy graduate on April 12, when they face Jordan Manley and American University.
