SB Nation Super Mock Draft Is Tomorrow: Who Should I Draft?
There are several other MLS mock drafts online by several other qualified soccer writers. But SB Nation has one advantage over those guys. We're just a collection of fans who are passionately dedicated to our teams. We'll be conducting a mock draft tomorrow night because we feel like the 18 of us collectively know our clubs' needs and likely drafting strategies better than any other single writer could.
Tune in at 9:00 PM tomorrow night to follow along live. Jeremiah Oshan will be running the show on the SB Nation Soccer mainpage, and he's even recruited Drew Epperly of WV Hooligan to provide some commentary/analysis/criticism/praise for each pick. We'll also have a story on the D.C. United selection here as soon as it happens.
As for United though, I have the honor of playing GM, and I still honestly haven't decided who to select with the No. 3 overall pick. And so I'd like to enlist your help.
We've already discussed Perry Kitchen and Darlington Nagbe here, but I imagine those will be the first two players selected. So vote below who you think I should pick for United with the third overall choice, and definitely tell me why in the comments section. And if you've got a sleeper that we might be able to select in the second round, those suggestions are welcome as well.
I can't say I'll definitely pick whoever is the leading vote-getter in this poll, but I will absolutely consider all opinions from United fans.

Sleeper Picks
Some possible choices for the 2nd round pick:
Ashley McInnes
Cole Grossman
Michael Boxall
I’d imagine that the team opt for a defensive player in the second round. The FO’s comments regarding the search for an offensive option could mean either Bruin or Sarkodie could be possibilities.

Bruin
The team has openly said they’re thinking of an attacker. Nagbe will be off the board unless Vancouver and Portland are both attempting to emulate the expansion seasons of Chivas and RSL.
With that in mind, and assuming Kitchen also goes to an expansion team, my move would be to take Bruin, who would be the best available attacker (and arguably the best available player). He’s Generation Adidas, and our target forward options involve Cristman (who isn’t even under contract) or playing someone in a role they’re not a natural in. Bruin could come in and contend for a starting job in 2011, possibly even at the beginning of the season. Our needs, our publicly stated preference, and Bruin’s qualities dovetail perfectly.
My second choice would be Salgado (another GA target forward, but at 17 we can’t really look at him as a 2011 contributor; anything beyond him simply making good progress as a player and as a person is icing on the cake).
After that, I’d go with Sarkodie from this list. Olsen wants an attacking team, and with Wallace gone we’ve lost some speed and positivity in our fullback spots. We could either see if Sarkodie can become an effective left back, or if Zayner can play on the left full-time with Sarkodie on the right. In either case, we will hopefully relegate Burch to a depth role while boosting our team speed.

Bruin vs. Salgado
There’s no doubt that out of the two, Bruin is more capable of starting in March 2011. But which player has the higher ceiling? Bruin is capable of having a rookie season similar to Zach Schilawski, but I’m not confident that he’ll ever turn into a 10-goal scorer like Conor Casey or Wondolowski. I feel like picking Salgado could be high risk / high reward. Are we willing to take the risk and wait though? The answer probably depends on the likelihood of United acquiring a proven scorer from overseas.

Up until this year, was anybody sure Wondolowski would ever be a 10-goal guy?
I like the promise of Salgado, and - I can’t believe I’m saying this given recent history - I’m going to trust the FO and coaching staff on him. If after seeing him in training for those weeks last year they think he’s got the potential to be a real superstar in MLS, and relatively soon, then I’ll have no problem with drafting him. Otherwise, though, it seems like a flyer we don’t have the luxury of taking right now.
Watching Bruin on the ol’ You Tube, he takes up good positions, seems to have a good first touch, he can shake off defenders, isn’t afraid to take a shot, has power when he does, and puts it on frame - maybe I’m just impressed because watching United the last couple years made me forget what those qualities look like. I think he could be a consistent threat like Casey or Cooper, and in a pretty short time.

Maybe this is how we'll find out how the search is going
If we’ve found a successor to Luciano Emilio somewhere, we’d be much more likely to take Salgado. Of course, Payne admitted yesterday that they expected Allsopp to get over 10 goals, so the fact that we might have a player in mind wouldn’t be any guarantee.
I still lean towards Bruin, but ending up with Salgado is hardly like ending up with Van Sicklen or Moose.

An inverted attacking wingback?
Now that would be interesting to see

Sleepers
In no particular order, here are some names that jump out as guys we might take for various reasons. I think Braga, Jimenez, Carrasco, and Rivas are probably our most likely picks out of that group, but picking late-round MLS draft picks is like picking lottery numbers.
John Rooney
Bobby Warshaw (Stanford)
Martin Rivas
Victor Estupinan
Marlon Ganchozo
Matheus Braga (Penn St.)
Hector Jimenez (Cal)
Servando Carrasco (Cal)
Jeff Attinella (South Florida)
Billy Cortes (Maryland)

Defense first?
While we do need a forward, maybe we should focus on a nice defensive foundation with Valentin and White, both that could start from day one. That seemed to work out pretty well for LA with Gonzalez and DeLaGarza.

Different situations
Gonzalez came out of college a better player than Valentin or White are today. More importantly, he walked into a vastly different situation. LA nestled Gonzalez in a back four that was going to be very strong with or without him (Franklin, Berhalter, and Dunivant). We don’t have a single veteran defender with Dunivant’s experience, much less Berhalter. Gonzalez is now in the national team conversation, whereas without the guidance and support he got he’d probably be no more than a solid MLS center back.
I like the idea of not being satisfied with our current defense, but it’s not a problem we can fix quickly via the draft. If we’re looking to draft our way to a solid defensive record, we’ll be bleeding goals this year and next year, even if Onstad is able to get the team to play better defensively from front to back. In the short term, we still need at least one finished product in the back serving as a leader. I think that’s why Payne and Olsen both said we’d take an attacking player at #3.
I have no problem with the idea of drafting a defensive player this season (I still think that if Kitchen falls to us, we should take him no matter who else is available), but with White coming in via the academy I think we have enough youth and potential there. It’s been a long, long time since we had a center back that teams are envious of.
Let me put it this way: I’d trade the #3 pick for a proven MLS center back that would start on over half of the league’s teams.

Maybe there are other candidates?
UCSB’s Michael Tetteh has signed a Generation Adidas deal.
Why does that matter to us? Tetteh is a left back/left midfielder; our weakest position at this point is probably left back. He’s a fast, skillful, tough player, but the knock on him is that he had injury problems this past year (though he should be just fine for the start of the preseason).
I don’t think we’d take him at #3, but it would be worth investigating what it would take to get a pick in the late 1st round/early 2nd round to select Tetteh. Then again, the club’s opinion of Burch is higher than is reasonable, so there’s a significant chance that they don’t see left back as the glaring problem that it has been for some time now.

There’s a little piece of me that really wants United to wheel and deal in this draft, especially if it means getting somebody like Sarkodie or Tetteh (him later in the 1st round than Sarkodie, likely). The problem is always what you have to give in the dealings.

Interesting
Not that you are interested in Tetteh, but that you think that there aren’t 11 weakest points on your roster. Sorry, that was mean. I do think that DC has to deal with either their defense or offense, I would think a good solid center back or one of the wealth of forwards would be the most beneficial to United. Hertzog is fairly local, and sounds like a real deal at forward.

Everybody has a turn at the bottom
You got yours out of the way early in your existence. I won’t fault you for lording your “well-built team” and “depth at every position” and “going to the playoffs in the last 3 years” over us during or short hiatus from the top.
/weeps openly/
Jerk. :)

Kofi Sarkodie
Kofi is without a doubt the most versatile player in the draft. He plays right back and is very capable of playing right midfield too. His foot work and first touch is unbelievable, and his speed will blow people away. He was also a captain of the 2010 national championship team of the Zips and plays with heart and passion. Sarkodie is the real deal and i can see Zips being drafted #1 #2 and #3.

Hmm…

Looking like Kitchen might be available at No. 3 afterall…

Tonight, it looks like a solid bet.
But what about next week? I know the Timbers need an offensive threat. You know the Timbers need an offensive threat. But is Spencer comfortable enough with the defense to start worrying about scoring goals yet?

Kitchen might be available?
Take him and run. If the FO gets ansty, they can parlay Simms into a later pick and still manage to get a top 5 forward.

Why so many votes for Salgado?
Honestly, I’m not getting the votes for Salgado. Other than height, he has nothing to offer but “potential”. Reviews on him from the U20 games is that he rushes and forces shots and lacks finishing skills. For a team looking for offensive help, that sounds like the type of player the team needs to stay far away from. I admit that his ceiling could be quite high, but he’s a project that likely won’t help for at least a year and a half. For a team needing help right away, choosing Salgado over a player like Sarkodie, Bruin, Kitchen, or Valentin is just absurd.
