A source has told B&RU that D.C. United has explored the option of adding Marcus Olsson to the roster. The 29-year old Swede currently plays with Derby County in the English Championship, and has played for the Rams since January 2016. Previously, he spent four years with Blackburn Rovers (where he was the club’s player of the year for the 2014-2015 season) and three with Halmstads BK in Sweden, and has 2 caps for the Swedish national team. Interestingly, Olsson’s twin brother Martin plays for Swansea City, who United shares an owner with.
Olsson plays mostly at left back but can also play at left wing. Patrick Nyarko, who may be facing an option to pick up a contract, has not had an effective back-up this season. Taylor Kemp may be in a similar contract situation, and his form has regressed since receiving an invite to the United States national team camp last January. Still, with United closing in on Nigel de Jong and currently having just one open international spot, a move for Olsson would probably require a second transaction.
We’ll see how this news progresses as the transfer window rolls towards a conclusion.
