Though the 2017 season is not quite over for a few teams, the rest are beginning to build for 2018. D.C. United’s preseason training usually follows a familiar rhythm: initial training in DC, followed by a trip somewhere for friendlies, and then another training stint in DC, followed by another round of friendlies. Today, United gave us some hints as to the latter round of friendlies, announcing that they will take on the Las Vegas Lights of USL on February 24.
Las Vegas Lights will also play against the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps in their “Soccer Spring Training” event, so United may play one or both of those teams if the schedules line up. They will be played at Cashman Field, so United’s preseason tradition of playing in baseball stadiums will also continue.
The past two seasons, United has been in Florida for most of the preseason and has played in the Suncoast Invitational. The rumor is that Florida is in their plans again for this preseason, so a trip from Florida to Nevada and back could be preparation for the long road trip that will define the first few months of United’s season.
