2017 US Open Cup draw pairs D.C. United with the New England Revolution

The Black-and-Red’s next step in their quest for the Cup is a trip to face the Revs

After a fourth round low on upsets but high on drama, US Soccer announced the pairings for the 2017 US Open Cup’s round of 16. D.C. United will face the New England Revolution on either June 27th or 28th. The tournament has been divided down into quadrants; should United advance, they will host the winner of the clash between the New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinal round.

While dates and times have not been confirmed yet, the Revs apparently know that they’ll be playing in Boston rather than at Gillette Stadium, their normal home:

The timing of the round of 16 game is interesting, to say the least. Sandwiched between games on the road with the Philadelphia Union on June 24th and the Montreal Impact on July 1st, it will be the third of 5 games over a 14 day span before the Gold Cup break. Starting with Tuesday’s win over Christos FC, United has truly entered the gauntlet: this 5-games-in-14-days run is just part of a stretch that will see them play seven times in three weeks, with only two games (the Christos win and next week’s midweek league match against Atlanta United) at home.

Update: US Soccer has confirmed that United's game against New England will take place at 7:30pm on June 28th. As mentioned before, the game will be played at Harvard's Jordan Field in Boston.

United’s recent history against New England has been very strong. The sides drew 2-2 in Massachusetts back in April, and in 2016 took 7 of 9 possible points without conceding a single goal in three meetings. In 2015 it was more of the same: a home win and a road draw in regular season play, followed by a 2-1 playoff victory at RFK Stadium. United has not lost to the Revolution since May 24, 2014.

US Soccer also confirmed that the quarterfinal round will take place on July 7th-16th. However, as United would be hosting in that scenario, it seems highly likely that they’d schedule the game towards the end of that window rather than turn 7 games in 22 days into 8 in 25 or 26. That said, venue issues could still force their hands; at this time, it is not known where they would host a potential quarterfinal.
