Friday, February 12th's Freedom Kick brought a link that should be read on its own:
There will be a futsal league in the US. And I believe that D.C. United could capitalize joining the league.
American futsal wants to be influenced by basketball. Mark Cuban and Jim Buss are involved. There will also be soon a new Wizard practice facility/Mystics home court in Anacostia.
So, a joint venture between D.C. United and Ted Leonsis make sense for a franchise in DC. The franchise would be "D.C. United," and play in Leonsis' facility. Shares would be 50-50.
A futsal team could be a cheaper and efficient way to draw more supporters to DC United. The atmoshpere in the stands are simply unbelievable. If our supporters' groups embrace the futsal team, those could be huge stepping stones to soccer for a lot of people. Nevertheless, it is quite possible that a DC United futsal team would be self-sustainable, with a fan base of its own – although there would still be a lot of overlapping with the soccer team as well.
I wonder if there could be a fan movement to bring forth this partnership and make the futsal team a reality?
Is anyone with me?
