2011 MLS Draft OpenThread

Hello from Baltimore. Here's hoping that this is the last time I ever have to drive to this city to cover my team.

I'm sitting here in the media room with UZ from Burgundy Wave, who traveled from Colorado to the draft despite his team having no picks in the first round. Well they pick 18th, so I'm pretty sure that's not the first round.

DC United picks third today (as of this writing) and is likely to add a forward to the team. Options likely to be available at No. 3 are Will Bruin, Omar Salgado, and Joao Plata. Will the team go for potential or experience? We'll find out in just about 30 minutes.

Or sooner. Rumors have indicated that the top overall pick may be in play if the Vancouver Whitecaps feel like giving it up. United has one pick in each of the first two rounds, but could certainly add more as they try to bring even more youth onto the roster.

I'll have live updates here and on SB Nation D.C., assuming the network connectivity here remains successful, which I'm not entirely confident about. For now though, use this thread to discuss who you want us to pick, and who we do pick.

Crazy Rumors About #s 1&2

If the rumors floating around are true I would be excited to see Kitchen fall to DCU, even if he isn’t a striker.

Tommy Soehn Strikes Again!!

Salgado is the first pick. United now has a shot at Kitchen or Nagbe. Huzzah!

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 12:06 PM EST reply actions

And it's Kitchen

Or it should be - Portland just took Nagbe.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 12:10 PM EST reply actions

There it is.

Perry Kitchen, welcome to the Nation’s Capital. Always good to have another kid from the Hoosier State.

And we set up the final test for the FO this offseason

Can they get in a real striker, or are they going to stuff a season with Wolff/Ngwenya down our throats? Not that I dislike those guys, but that’s not a serious attempt to provide a primary finisher.

That said, I’m happy to see them sensibly draft for best talent rather than greatest need. I was terrified they would take Bruin, again nothing against Will Bruin, but Kitchen is so clearly the better choice there.

Anyone have a theory on whether Kitchen will play midfield or defense for us?

by Stunned Duck on Jan 13, 2026 12:27 PM EST reply actions

Coup in the Kitchen

Who’da thunk it? This was the guy I was willing to trade up to the first spot in the draft to get, and we got him for nothing at #3. And we still have Clyde to hold down the midfield, giving the team time to bring Kitchen along without throwing him right into the fire.

I’m currently daydreaming about him or Shanosky playing a Busquets-type role for future DCU teams… http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/09/20/atletico-madrid-1-2-barcelona-busquets-takes-modern-centre-half-role-a-little-further/

Scattered thoughts from my desk

Couldn’t make it to the draft, but I’ve been monitoring it from my desk.

- Vancouver’s selection of Salgado is a godsend for Portland and DC. Granted, Salgado might turn into a superstar, but so might Nagbe and Kitchen.

- Taking Kitchen at #3, with Salgado and Nagbe gone, was a no-brainer for DC. It’s notable that Kitchen has gotten more “future national team” talk than anyone else in the draft. Kitchen could contend for a starting job now (that Simms trade rumor might even come back to life), and is a potential future captain for the team. As much as we talked about picking Bruin, it always involved Kitchen being off the board. This is a steal, even as early as it happened.

- MLS and ESPN both made some pretty big errors in covering the draft. Twellman’s mic was left on for him to accidentally say Lenhart was the Crew player traded to San Jose. MLS, meanwhile, can’t get ESPN out of the way to start their own live coverage and has apparently abandoned updating their draft tracker (something that happens every year).

- Valentin to Chivas is a good pick. He should start over Trujillo. It also points to Fraser taking a “keep it simple” approach to building his team. His outside backs will defend first, second, and third before they start trying to bomb forward.

- Houston’s 1st round haul is 2 good players, but do they make sense for today’s Dynamo? Bruin joins Ching and Weaver as yet another big target forward, with Weaver (who kind of sucks, frankly) being expendable. Sarkodie makes less sense, since they just signed Freeman to be their right back and Hainault will be a solid left back. Maybe they see Sarkodie as a right midfielder? Or perhaps Hainault will partner Boswell in central defense? It’s not like Freeman and Hainault are nearing retirement.

- Chicago had to love getting Anibaba. Potential day 1 starter with their central defensive situation (oft-injured Gibbs and unknown Croatian Mikulic are the presumptive starters).

- Columbus reached for Balchan at #12, especially since the best “Swiss Army knife” type player (Bobby Warshaw) was still available. When was the last time the Crew made a truly good decision?

- RSL should have taken Estupinan instead of trading the pick to Chivas. They’re going to need striker help, unless Alvarez plays there exclusively. Even if he does, he and Paulo Jr are hardly a compatible forward pair (with both being like 5’7" or shorter).

- Dallas should be thrilled about getting Warshaw. He can fill in so many places, and Hyndman has shown a knack for getting young defensive players to develop quickly.

- Philly and New England did well in the 2nd round by getting Farfan and McCarthy. McCarthy especially could become a starter fairly quickly, as Joseph’s partners for the Revs are pretty unremarkable.

More thoughts while I wait for lunch to arrive

- DC and Philly fans sound loud. NY showed up well the last time the draft was in Baltimore, but they’ve been drowned out a bit (at least on the audio from ESPN and MLS).

- Speaking of NY, picking Rooney seems to fit well. Big name, club that wants to be flashy…it fits off the field anyway. Rooney might find it hard to crack the team, with the line to be Marquez’s partner to include Tchani, the new signing Jan Gunnar Solli, Ballouchy, Lindpere if he pinches in, and the forgotten Ubiparipovic. Someone should trade for Ubi, he’s solid.

- Omphroy to TFC might be a conversion project (to left back, where they have no one). Good player, but maybe not the best place for him.

- Seattle nabbed Carrasco, who should try to become Alonso’s understudy. Good player.

- Grossman to Columbus happened later than people thought, but it makes sense with their thin central midfield. Still, they should temper expectations of him as a starter. He’ll be more of a bench/Open Cup player.

- Plata could fall to DCU at 31. NY’s on the clock now, and if they skip him he’s there. We have the foreign spots available…

New York fans showed up

They directed their vitriol primarily at Philly, with some nice Chester Molester signs and an inflatable doll to play off the Bimbo sponsorship. However, they were behind the DCU fans (who I honestly thought didn’t bring their A game) and the Philly fans were on the other side of the hall by themselves. I think the mics just picked our groups up better than the Red Bulls. Also, they were all dressed as vikings, which is apparently their new thing?

by Brendanukkah on Jan 13, 2026 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

From the press area (behind the black curtain to the right of you guys), NYRB had the loudest support. Their “Best Rooney Ever!” cheer was pretty funny.

Yeah...

I had gone drinking by that point. As had most of the DCU contingent.

by Brendanukkah on Jan 13, 2026 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Another possibility for why other groups were loud

We had been told that any flags, banners, signs, or drums would not be allowed and would result in our removal from the floor. However, the Red Bulls, Union and even the Timbers fans had some or all of these things. The Red Bulls even had an inflatable doll. So, yeah.

DCU selects Akron defender Chris Korb with the #31 pick

Korb can play left back or right back. People talked about him as “the other Akron player,” but that’s still very good company to keep. Smart player, and he was going soon too.

A LEFT BACK!

Any chance he pushes Burch for time on the left by midseason?

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

The sooner the better

I kind of wanted Tetteh to inexplicably fall to us. Anything to increase our speed and agility there.

The good think about Korb is that he’s got a defender’s mentality and looks like he’s had it for a long, long time. Burch still looks like an unfinished conversion project despite it being like 4-5 years in the making. Korb doesn’t have to learn the position, he just has to step up to MLS’s level of play.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I sighed - wistfully and audibly - in my office when Tetteh came off the board.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Let us hope. Maybe Olson is thinking this pick can at least put some pressure on Burch to pick it up.

by madavis on Jan 13, 2026 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

I was in the Pratt St. Ale House with Perry Kitchen when this pick was made

Perry was very happy to have his college teammate get drafted by the same team. Pretty sure Korb was also pleased. That can only be a good thing, and they’ve already got road trip roommates figured out.

by Brendanukkah on Jan 13, 2026 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Plata

I’m a little surprised that nobody has taken a chance on the little guy yet. It might be worth it to trade a late pick in next year’s draft (or a suppie) and some allocation $ to grab him or another attacker; we’re getting late enough in the draft that some teams will trade their picks pretty cheap.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 2:52 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

At this point, picks are all flyers. We can probably get a shot at Plata for nearly nothing. If it doesn’t work out, no big loss. On the off chance it does, we have a real threat to defenses (wherever he lines up). Low risk, high reward.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

It's a shame

Plata went one pick before United traded up to take Joe Willis

I’m starting to think Plata goes in the Supplemental Draft. Size matters, eh? As does taking up an international spot…

Hmm

Goff: DC United might try to trade for a pick in 3rd round #dcu

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Picks since then

- Murray to Sporting. He could challenge Espinoza, who I wouldn’t trust if I was a KC fan. However, that’s more about Espinoza’s shakiness than Murray’s ability. He can get forward well, I’ll say that.

- Ampaipitakwong finally goes, with San Jose bringing him in. I don’t see Yallop liking him; he’s always preferred physical central midfielders. This seems a little odd.

- Jimenez to LA is a good pick for the Bruce. He was one I thought we might consider, though obviously midfield is our most crowded spot. Don’t be shocked if he gets decent minutes, especially from July onward (half-season adjustment period).

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Jimenez is TINY

At least Plata looks to have some bulk/muscle to him. I saw Jimenez up close and he’s the size of a middle schooler. Listed at 5’-9" 140 lbs. I’m also listed at 5’-9" and yet I’d say I was several inches taller.

Speaking of Twitter

Telling quote from Kasper on Kitchen:

“We think he’s going to compete for a starting centerback position or possibly a holding midfield position.”

Intriguing development. It’s not often you see a teenager become a 1st choice center back, but it’s also not often you get a player as good as Kitchen is. It might also point to Olsen seeing defensive midfield as stocked well enough (Simms, Morsink, Shanosky).

Cortes from MD goes to NY

Ugh! I hate that so many Terps immediately go to DC’s rivals and I have to hate them. Still, hate them I must.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 3:19 PM EST reply actions

A guy named Rooney, though

That’s just easy to hate.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Damn!

Plata’s off the board, headed for TFC. Good pick for them, they need some skill.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 3:55 PM EST reply actions

Saw that

But we are making another pick… giving a couple suppies to LA for another pick today.

Didn’t that guy on the Popeye cartoons try making that deal, actually?

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

and it's a GK

Joe Willis out of Denver. I thought I saw his name on the “stock falling” list…

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

All Defense in the Draft

This must mean DCU will be on the international watch for filling in our offensive depth. Any chance we go DP for an impact forward?

by madavis on Jan 13, 2026 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Seems doubtful

Payne said us signing a DP would really involve a perfect storm. I think it’ll be more about finding a guy that will play in MLS for $300K or less (think Emilio or Saborio before he played his way into a DP deal).

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Wimpy

Hopefully Willis doesn’t exclusively eat hamburgers.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Would be a hell of a gimmick, though, amiright. Especially if he was halfway decent. We’d have young GKs all over the area imitating him right into obesity.

Also, way to know your awesome old references.

Man we got a big boy.

by Zach J on Jan 13, 2026 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Thinking about this for a second...

We just traded LA’s #16 Supp Draft pick back to them, if I’m thinking right. We had obtained it in exchange for Cristman.

So, effectively, we traded our 4th Round pick and Adam Cristman to LA for their 3rd Round pick.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Acceptable deal

Cristman might not have signed.

Maybe we traded up to get ahead of, say, RSL for Willis (someone that would have had an easier chance to see him at Denver)? Who knows?

Willis will be up against Harrison and Horvath at the moment for our #3 GK spot.

by ChestRockwell on Jan 13, 2026 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Kitchen and Korb are nice and all, but....

now comes the period of time waiting for a the front office to sign a bonafide striker.

by Zach J on Jan 13, 2026 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Yep.

Benny says there are irons in the fire. We just have to hope they use one of them to reel in a striker.

Though I’ve never used a hot iron to reel something in. I’d think the fishing line would break. But then again, successfully mixing metaphors has never been my strong suit.

by The AMT on Jan 13, 2026 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

All I know is Chris Pontius better be working his way back to full health. We’re gonna need him up top.

Managing Editor for BlackAndRedUnited.com. Weekend Writer for SBNation DC.

by Martin Shatzer on Jan 13, 2026 8:12 PM EST reply actions

I've been thinking about that

I think if it’s between him and Quaranta, I actually kind of like Q up top and Pontius on the left wing. Quaranta might be able to play the false 9 pretty decently.

Plus, if he’s got everybody behind him on the field, he’s going to be less likely to send a 40-yard ball to nobody in particular. ;)
