Moreno? Really? What does he have on "the Don"
OK, I would have been fine if Garber had picked Najar for the All Star team, not thrilled but he is fun to watch, but to pick Jamie Moreno is an insult to the team. I get that he is a MLS original, and if there were a farewell tour for him and he had never made an All Star team but neither of those are likely.
So how does one justify putting a guy with a single goal, and only 5 starts for his team on the MLS All Star team that will face Manchester United? Even more of a question, knowing Landon and Edson have a match the night before he picks two forwards, and I get the hometown pick of Ching, may not like it but I get it. But can someone, anyone (asking here where the DC United fans hang out) tell me why in the hell anyone would pick Jamie Moreno for the 2010 MLS All Star team?
Sad part is that a guy with 7 goals and 4 assists (3rd in MLS got left home for this pick).

The very fact that you’re pissed your boy didn’t get on made me vote Yes.
That said, if any DCU guy should have gotten in, it should have been Najar. Guessing this is a farewell thing more than anything else, since the Bolivian team is coming here to play in a couple weeks.
And I thought Tom Soehn was a shitty coach.

It's a last hurrah, and that's fine.
Commissioner’s picks are the Don’s to do with as he pleases. It is not for us mere mortals to question the Don on this, the day of his daughter’s wedding…
Personally, I don’t much like the All-Star Game, especially mid-season (If you’re going to be pissed about something, be pissed about that). Regardless, I don’t have a problem giving the all-time leading everything guy one last resume line. Like an honorary Ph.D, he really didn’t earn the honor the way everybody else did, but that doesn’t mean he’s not deserving on other criteria.
Besides, most United fans I’ve talked to over the years actually get annoyed when our guys make the squad - injuries are waaay to frequent (See Namoff, Pontius, Wallace, Jakovic, Emilio, Pontius again, Jakovic again…) to risk our best players’ health in a meaningless midsummer matchup (excuse the alliteration). The trick is to be named to the “inactive all star” list, where you still get your performance bonus (30 players total get one) but don’t actually have to show up to the festivities.

that was changed
I would have no problem with Moreno being named and declining, maybe he still will? I think the same for GBS, these “older” guys have an out, but if you are going to have a All Star Match, don’t you want the best players. I get the honorary thing, but he has been there 6 times before so how is it an honor when you’re not even starting for your own team?
I agree about the All Star Match in general, I don’t mind mid season (only the NFL does it differently), I do think doing it midweek is horrid, I think doing it when 3 of your teams have important matches either the night before or on the same day is simply awful. “the Don” has no problem clearing the schedules for SuperLiga, but Champions League, All Star, way less important than Chivas vs Pumas in Chicago or whatever.
They don’t have the inactive All Star list anymore, it went away with the new CBA, now 23 players, 11 by vote, 10 by coach, 2 by comish.

The bonus is the part that gets me. If Garber just wants to give Moreno an honorary lifetime achievement award, that’s fine. But it means Moreno will get a bonus and more deserving players (like Najar and Saborio) will not.

Eh, all things being equal, maybe he shouldn’t have made it. But it’s only the All-Star Game—it’s just meant to be fun, and he’s the only DCU player to make the squad, so I’m happy. I voted No, but I’m not pissed off about it.

The Don
I think we all made some assumptions heading in.
We assumed first that Don Garber would use his two selections to take exciting players that fans like to watch. That’s why we thought Najar would get picked. Or even Fredy Montero would be a justifiable pick. But Moreno is no longer that sexy player, and Ching definitely isn’t either.
Secondly, we assumed that Garber has a clue what the fans want. It seems to me like he had his own agenda that he was trying to carry out with his two picks. And that agenda was definitely not giving the fans what they want.
Regardless of Garber’s reasoning, don’t hate on Jaime Moreno. He’s pure class on and off the field, and he doesn’t need to be mocked for his stats this season. Blame Garber. Don’t blame Jaime.

It's a justifiable decision
denz, I can see why this would bug you, since RSL is one of the best teams in the league and plays great soccer. However, I think you’re overreacting here while totally ignoring Moreno’s contributions to MLS history (for example, Moreno has 134 league goals in MLS, the same number as the entire RSL roster). Let’s not forget that just last year, Garber’s picks were exclusively RSL players, despite the fact that RSL was a middling 5-6-5 at that point, and one of those picks (Javier Morales) had a rather disappointing opening half to the season. Seems to me you’re getting a little greedy, even if Saborio would have made my squad.
Plus, if we look back a few years, MLS screwed Moreno over in 2004 by ridiculously giving the MVP to Amado Guevara, who had a superb first half of the season followed by a second half that ranged from “adequate” to “indifferent.” Moreno, meanwhile, was fantastic all season long. This also wipes away the talk of bonuses in my book, since Moreno would have gotten a bonus for that MVP award but did not.
This is a lifetime achievement award. Moreno may have only had one season where he was the outright best player in MLS, but he’s had easily the best career in MLS history. It also seems highly likely that he’ll retire at the end of the season. MLS should recognize guys like Moreno when they get the chance, and letting him into this all star game is probably the last real opportunity they’ll get.
Finally, the commissioner’s picks are generally indulgent (Freddy Adu was once an MLS all star, for example). There’s also usually a hometown pick in there (or two, if you’re especially lucky!). This is no different, and really shouldn’t be come as much of a surprise.

Much better put than my response (as usual), but my sentiments exactly.

Chest and Martin
I don’t blame Jamie for any of this, he didn’t ask for it. I have a ton of respect for him as a player and I believed that keeping him on the pitch this year was going to be the key to DC having a decent year, he hasn’t been on the pitch enough and I believe that his vision and leadership are missed.
We may not play great soccer all the time, but we have some solid players. Morales last year was a makeup pick for 2008 (I didn’t care for the pick at all), and I get Garber making homer picks. I guess for me the real issue is that we know that LA plays on Tuesday night in Puerto Rico in CCL, so expecting either Landon or Edson to go 90 is wrong. So this leaves us with Juan Pablo and Ching having to do the bulk of the work, Saborio would have been a nice option, but this means we likely will have to see De Ro move up top. I get that it is a All Star match and doesn’t mean anything really, but what does this say to MLS fans about the match? Not much, what message does this send to Manchester United?
I would love to see them honor Jamie either at the MLS All Star Match or at the MLS Cup, I think a player of the decade award or lifetime achivement would be more than fitting for someone who has given so much to this league. It is likely that a couple players will back out, they usually do and I am confident we will see some changes and maybe “the Don” already knows that but I think there was a better way to honor Moreno for all that he has done. Oh and I was hoping to see Najar twice next week.

CCL complicates things big time
I will agree that things will be awkward up front for Arena. Not only will he have plenty of reasons to keep Donovan and Buddle out of the game until very late, but Ricketts and Gonzalez will have presumably played 90 minutes for LA as well. De Rosario also might not be capable of much, since Toronto plays their CCL first leg qualifier the night before at BMO Field.
Arena’s forward options come down to Ching and Angel as the out-and-out striker, while Schelotto and Moreno would both be available to play underneath. Le Toux can play either role, and may also end up on the flank. It’s not perfect, but Arena will at least have realistic options (rather than, say, trying Bornstein up front because he played there in college and a handful of Chivas games awhile back, ur use Joseph up there like Nicol did last year).

true
This is why I am confused by the picks, unless they are going to have a couple guys decline their invites (usually happens for injuries or teams with busy schedules), it could be very interesting how a coach who will have spent no time with the team before the match will make these decisions. I have a feeling of two things, first you will see the decisions being made at practice and for the match by Kinnear, and second you will have at least 2-3 new players named to the roster by Tuesday. We saw it last year when Will Johnson was a last minute pick because of injuries to scheduled players.
All of this is why I think the choice of Moreno by the Comish was a poor one, I do like your idea of doing a lifetime achievement but that might be more appropriate at MLS Cup at the end of the season. This leaves out All Star team weaker than it could or should be, but based on how the Man U mixed lineups are used it could be a real bland match.
