PrintThe cross-country rivalry continues tonight as DC United takes on the hated Seattle Sounders. United is now undefeated in four straight matches after starting the season 1-8-0, but they have not yet gotten a result on the road. Could tonight be the night?

Last minute thoughts: Both teams tonight are coming off of strong league performances, with United shutting out the previously highest scoring Real Salt Lake, and Seattle dismantling the Revolution 3-0. Gone are the days when DC looked like a pushover and Seattle were failing to convert their many chances. United will look to exploit Seattle's slow and foul-prone backline and grab a couple goals to take us home through the World Cup break. .

Anyone catch Kyle Martino say that we’re playing more defensively lately? I haven’t seen that as the case at all. We’ve improved defensively as a team, but you can do that without playing more defensive soccer. With the numbers we put forward, you can hardly accuse us of being in some kind of bunker.

This is true. The DC match in Seattle on ESPN2 was MLS’s highest rated regular season match of the year. Its no coincidence that both United/Sounders matches are on ESPN2 this year.

Quick halftime comments
1. Seattle is outplaying us, but we’re not giving them real chances. Their best chance was the Parke header off the corner kick 6 minutes in. Still, this game isn’t over yet.
2. Kyle Martino usually does an OK job as an announcer, but tonight he’s been awful. His blind love for the Sounders is bad enough, but he also clearly didn’t research DCU before watching this game. I know this is ESPN’s JV announcing squad, but still.
3. Gonzalez has Najar in his pocket for the most part because he steps up before the ball arrives. Najar needs to learn that if Gonzalez has time to make that step up, you don’t take him 1v1. Take a touch, keep the ball moving, and try to attack elsewhere.
4. Ljungberg is a total punk bitch.
5. I noticed Barry Rice warming up on his own in the 42nd minute. Could it be a sub coming? No one looks hurt, but Graye is struggling to cope with the whining douchebag on the right wing.
6. Keller might have injured his hand in failing to save Party Boy’s 2nd goal. That would be a plus for us, butterfingers notwithstanding.
7. Party Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8. Emilio is offering little. He’s not being lazy, but he’s not really making an impact at all. Allsopp or Cristman should get in if Emilio can’t make himself a factor in the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half.

Quick points after the game
1. Barry Rice’s first real action is to crunch Ljungberg. Glorious.
2. James was brilliant at what I call “desperate defending.” In short, he was blocking shots and making lunging tackles all night long. MOTM, definitely. That said, desperate defending is only an inch or two away from being bad defending. James walked a fine line, but he did it brilliantly.
3. It took until the 78th minute for Seattle to really worry Troy Perkins. That’s why, despite them dominating possession and camping in our end the whole game, this isn’t a complete fluke of a win. If Seattle breaks us down earlier, we lose this one 5-3 or something similar.
4. Third goal was definitely Cristman. Sorry to steal a hat trick from Party Boy, but without Cristman that ball doesn’t go all the way over the line.
5. Schmid and Riley bitching at the refs is typical of both the Sounders and of Schmid throughout his time in MLS. Blame the refs, talk about how lucky we were, and never mention the fact that you needed 90 minutes to breach a back four down to literally the last 4 defenders we have, one of whom was playing out of position. Fat idiot. Go eat 20 doughnuts or whatever it is that allowed you to get to 600 pounds.
