This week's version of our MLS Power Rankings features some unanimity at the top, with all eight SB Nation Soccer voters naming Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, and the New York Red Bulls to the top tier.
What gets interesting though is the middle. With eight teams likely in the playoffs, only the Kansas City Wizards are left in our "Outside looking in" third tier. They're the only team left with a shot. But do they really have a shot? With four games left and trailing the Colorado Rapids by eight points, not much. The question is whether or not the Rapids will continue to perform like they did against D.C. United on Saturday night. If so, they might not earn another point the rest of the year.

Since you guys have already started the fight about the tier names, I am pretty sure that there is no way either DC or Chivas gets that #3 draft pick.
So, technically, the fourth tier should only be two teams and all of the rest should be in tier 3.

Actually one of the voters attempted to put DCU in Tier 5. Which we probably deserve overall. But this just didn’t seem to be the right week to do it considering we just beat a playoff team on the road.

correction
you beat a potential playoff team, I am expecting the Rapids to end with 41 points and am hoping KC can find a way to end with 42. Here is to hoping RSL can knock out Colorado from the playoffs on the last day of the season for a 3rd straight year.
Oh and putting you in Tier 5 was kinda a joke, I might just have to put Chivas with you as well.

A few voters agree
1 had only DCU and Houston in Tier 4
1 added Chivas.
To get a point means that at least one voter thinks said team belongs in Tier 3

Actually the Tier name should probably be changed
That would solve the problem. I believe these Tier names were come up with in week 1. Brings up a good point on the voting.

MLS Is More Top Heavy This YEar
I do not think a 6, 7, or 8 seed has even a shot at winning the cup like in years past.
Win or lose, we will always be here for you.

True story
and there is no scrum for the last playoff spot even. Last year you had 6 teams fighting for the last spot on the last day of the season.

Agreed
It’s really Haves and Have-Nots, isn’t it?
On paper, you’d say there are 6 “good” teams: RSL, Dallas, NY, LA, Seattle, and Columbus. The Crew seem to be a totally spent force at this point, though. In my opinion, it would be a shock if they get past the first round of the playoffs. The lack of a ruthless goalscorer and their overall lack of energy at this point in the season will kill them off.
San Jose and Colorado both strike me as teams with issues in the back and with consistency. Both teams are usually well-drilled and organized, but they lack standout defenders. Would any starting defender from either team find a start for the defenses of the top five? Other than Jason Hernandez and Drew Moor possibly being able to displace Carlos Mendes, the answer would be a firm no. I’m not saying these two teams have no hope (San Jose’s options in the attack are quite nice, and Colorado has the best pair of forwards in MLS), but the odds are stacked against them.

Eastern Conference
The East is totally up for grabs. If Colorado and San Jose get sent there, as they currently would, any one of those four teams could reach the MLS Finals. Sure, the Red Bulls look strong right now. But come playoff time, they’re still the Red Bulls…
