D.C. United and hospitality workers union announce Buzzard Point deal

Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. United, and UNITE HERE Local 25 jointly announced a labor peace agreement for the Buzzard Point stadium and hotel.

D.C. United, UNITE HERE Local 25, and Mayor Muriel Bowser held a joint press conference today in which they announced a labor peace agreement between the team and the union. UNITE HERE Local 25 is the local chapter that represents over 6,000 hospitality workers in the Washington Metro area, and the union nationally represents hotel works and food service workers, among many others.

From the press release:

The labor peace agreement provides a fair process for hotel and food service workers at the proposed stadium at Buzzard Point to join the union and negotiate a first contract. In return, the union agrees not to strike or picket at the stadium.

This is another step forward in the stadium process that has been quiet for a couple of months now, since the DC Council vote. What is somewhat surprising is the fact that the hotel is mentioned so prominently in the press release, with hotel workers mentioned above and with John Boardman, a member of the leadership of Local 25, mentioning the hotel specifically in his statement. Most of us had thought that the hotel was further behind in the process, and it may very well still be; however, it seems more like a concrete part of the plan rather than just wishful thinking at this point.
