Report: D.C. United monitoring Honduras goalkeeper Luis Lopez?

An odd rumor has the Black-and-Red considering a move for the Real España GK

Let’s face it: D.C. United’s silence on matters of player rumors since word came out of Bruno Miranda possibly/probably/maybe joining the team 3 weeks ago falls into the “quiet, too quiet” category. And that’s why Honduran outlet La Prensa claiming that United is apparently monitoring goalkeeper Luis Lopez is a head scratcher at best.

The 23-year old (nicknamed “Buba”) is coming off a CONCACAF Gold Cup which saw him help the Catrachos to the quarterfinals, playing in all four games for the team, recording shutouts in two, and giving up just one goal in the others, including a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Mexico. Last year he helped the team reach the semifinals of the 2016 Olympics in Rio before losing to Brazil. At the club level he’s apparently a workhorse, starting 116 over four years for Real España, who finished third in the most recent season

Getting someone of Lopez’s pedigree would immediately bump Travis Worra and Eric Klenofsky down the depth chart, and pursuing a goalkeeper would bring up questions about Bill Hamid. In the last year of his contract and in talks with the team, perhaps Lopez is a backup plan for United in case Hamid oft-rumored move to Europe finally happens. At the very least, it’s keeping options open in net for the Black-and-Red.

As with most transfer rumors in CONCACAF, this has its shaky aspects. This rumor comes a week after España’s sporting director said that he’d received calls from four teams in Europe inquiring about his services. United is mentioned alongside the Houston Dynamo (who have their own Honduras contingent), New York City FC and CD Tenerife of the Segunda Division in Spain (who just signed fellow Honduran Bryan Acosta to a deal). So at a minimum, this sounds like another case of someone throwing team names on the wall to see what sticks. Sure, Dave Kasper checked out Honduras and Costa Rica at Red Bull Arena a couple of weeks back, but if he was truly interested in a player or two there, I’d start with checking out defensive midfielder Alfredo Mejia.

In the meantime, KEEPER SIZZLE REEL!
