In a game that one could easily understand if they were not able to win, Loudoun United covered the most miles they’ve done as a team on a road trip to date. Heading to New Mexico, and stopped a three-game unbeaten streak by New Mexico United with a 1-0 win in front of 8,801 at Isotopes Park. Along with their first win of 2021, the victory marks Loudoun’s first win since an August 12 win over New York Red Bulls II, a span of 291 days.

Loudoun had Jacob Greene (recently loaned by D.C. United) starting next to Michael DeShields, part of a 343 lineup, with Ted Ku-DiPietro centrally next to Jeremy Garay. Samson Sergi, who played for New Mexico last season, started against his old team up top.

Things were generally quiet until the 23rd minute when Gaoussou Samake sent a ball downfield that Kairou Amoustapha appeared to outrun Austin Yearwood to. Amoustapha went down and referee Chris Ruska determined it was enough to give Yearwood a red card, putting New Mexico down a man early.

It was in the 41st minute when the work of another DCU loanee paid off, as Jovanny Bolivar’s one-timer rocket gave Loudoun the lead going into the half:

The second half found Loudoun weathering a storm by New Mexico, who brought in attacking players at halftime and throughout the second half. New Mexico outpossessed (54-46) and outshot them 16-13, with 13 of New Mexico’s shots coming inside the Loudoun area. Jermaine Fordah was up to the task throughout:

Loudoun (1-2-0) hosts Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Wednesday, June 2 at 7:00pm at Segra Field.
