D.C. United’s MLS Cup potential, USWNT, and Frankie Hedjuk: Freedom Kicks for 10 October 2018

Soccer, go!

MLS: Chicago Fire at D.C. United Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning! It is currently drizzly here in Richmond, but later today and into tonight we are all going to get a good amount of rain from the remains of Hurricane Michael. Make sure you are prepared, and thoughts to everyone who has already been affected by this storm.

To the soccer!

MLS Cup run for DC United? Seattle Sounders’ history shows it’s possible - MLSsoccer.com: While we are getting ahead of ourselves, since United isn’t even in the playoffs yet, there are some interesting comparisons to be made.

Washington Spirit owner in talks about selling majority share of NWSL club - The Washington Post: Steve Goff reports that Bill Lynch, the current owner of the Washington Spirit, is looking to bring in a new majority owner while he retains a substantial stake in the club; he even has a fellow tech executive in mind. However...

Apparently the area’s men’s soccer team had also expressed interest in buying the Spirit, and were nonplussed to find out about another suitor via the press.

USA beats Trinidad & Tobago 7-0 at World Cup qualifying - Stars and Stripes FC: World Cup qualifying is going well for at least one US national team, with the USWNT proceeding easily through the group stage.

En Luto: Mexico Fails To Qualify For 2019 World Cup - FMF State Of Mind: The other traditional power of men’s soccer in North America, however, has seen their women’s team fail to qualify for the World Cup.

Loudoun County United proceeds at pace, with construction of their new stadium near Leesburg set to start.

Columbus Crew SC’s Frankie Hejduk berates former coworker on Twitter - Massive Report: Yes, Frankie Hedjuk bleeds Black and Gold, but berating a former coworker on Twitter for taking a new job is over the line. The update to the story, that Frankie may have lashed out because he has been told he can’t say anything negative about the team or support the Save The Crew movement, makes it even worse: he called her “fake” and a “traitor” just in the service of a paycheck, when he could have said nothing.

Nonprofit opens access to soccer for Richmond’s growing Latino community - richmond.com: My local newspaper has a great article that touches on Richmond’s growing Latino community and the obstacles that pay-to-play puts on their families and their ability to play soccer.

United States Canada Mexico could form combined league after 2026 World Cup - ESPN: Yeah, sure, okey. There is no way that there would be established league play across the entirety of North America. The United States is already huge, and adding the world’s 14th largest country to the world’s second and third largest countries is just bonkers. An expanded Superliga, however, where perhaps the top two MLS teams skip our playoffs and faceoff against the top two Mexican teams? That could happen.

That’s all I have today. What’s up?
