After the Chicago Red Stars acquired Kristie Mewis in a trade with the Washington Spirit on Monday, Chicago waived rookie midfielder Morgan Proffitt to make room. Today, the Spirit claimed Proffitt off the waiver wire. Proffitt played in seven games, one of them a start, for the Red Stars this season.
Proffitt played as a holding midfielder for Chicago, but can also play as a center back. The 23 year old will likely back up Tori Huster and Meggie Dougherty Howard, Washington’s first-choice defensive midfielders. Proffitt could also provide extra depth at center back as the Spirit close out the 2017 season.
Currently, the Spirit have the roster space to sign Proffitt. However, Kelsey Wys and Francisca Ordega will likely return soon, which will force the Spirit to clear a spot. After the Spirit’s game on Saturday, head coach Jim Gabarra said that Wys would probably return to the roster this week and Ordega on August 26.
