Washington Spirit’s game against Houston Dash postponed

A day-long downpour eventually saw the officiating crew declare the field unplayable

Following torrential rain throughout the day, the Washington Spirit’s game against the Houston Dash was abandoned due to poor field conditions. The game will be re-scheduled. One option for the new date is tomorrow, Sunday July 22, but due to complicated travel logistics for Houston, it could be a later day.

A storm that arrived in the early morning hours never left the region, absolutely soaking the playing surface at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Right at 7pm, just moments before players would normally have emerged to take the field, referee Elvis Osmanovic and his crew determined that the field was simply not playable. With at least five visible puddles of standing water and no end in sight to the storm, the game was abandoned.

Washington had planned on fielding what appeared to be a midfield diamond on the night, with Estefania Banini as an attacking midfielder underneath Francisca Ordega and Ashley Hatch. Rebecca Quinn was slated to start at center back over normal starter Whitney Church.
