Days before their 2018 season opener, the Washington Spirit have added a very familiar face, claiming winger Tiffany Weimer off waivers after she was let go by the Houston Dash. Weimer, who spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Spirit, is making her second return to Washington in this offseason, having been initially selected in the dispersal draft that followed the demise of the Boston Breakers.
Five weeks ago, citing a mutual decision between player and club, the Spirit traded Weimer to the Dash. However, capping an offseason that has left observers around the league puzzled, Houston — who per the Spirit were the party that initiated that trade — opted to cut Weimer loose, allowing Washington to bring the 34-year-old Connecticut native back into the fold.
As a dispersal draft selection, Weimer can be added to Washington’s maxed-out roster without having to release anyone to make room. As such, the Spirit will enter the season with 22 players on their active roster (Rose Lavelle, like Weimer, does not require a roster spot for the 2018 season). Per the Spirit, Weimer is expected to arrive next week.
