Washington Spirit waive Line Sigvardsen Jensen, exercise options on 17

Catch up on the Spirit’s offseason machinations

Brad Smith/Washington Spirit

The Washington Spirit placed Line Sigvardsen Jensen on the re-entry wire and exercised club options on 17 players. Due to a large number of injuries this season, the Spirit’s roster is larger than the current roster limit. Assuming that the NWSL maintains the same roster size for 2018, the Spirit will have to release players. However, the club can bring 32 players into preseason camp before making cuts.

Sigvardsen Jensen tore her ACL playing for Denmark in the semfinal match of Euro 2017 and missed the rest of the season. Before departing for the Euros, she started in eight matches for the Spirit. However, rookie Meggie Dougherty Howard emerged as a standout midfielder in Sigvardsen Jensen’s absence, and the Spirit later traded for rookie Morgan Proffitt, another defensive midfielder. Today, Sigvardsen Jensen was not claimed off waivers by any NWSL team, essentially ending her time with Washington.

Washington also extended new contract offers to goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and defender Kassey Kallman. The following table details the moves made over the past couple of days:
