Washington Spirit waive Tiffany Weimer

To free up roster space, the Spirit waive beloved forward Tiffany Weimer.

The  Washington Spirit waived forward Tiffany Weimer, the club announced this afternoon. Weimer came on as a substitute during each of the Spirit's two preseason matches this season. Unfortunately for Weimer, the Spirit had already signed 20 players- the maximum amount of roster spots. To clear roster space for a draft pick, the club needed to waive a player.

Cheyna Williams, the Spirit's first round draft pick this year, is a likely signee. She has started in each preseason game and has combined well with Katie Stengel.

Weimer, 32, was traded from the Portland Thorns to the Spirit in 2014. She tore her ACL in preseason and consequently missed the 2014 season. Due to lingering knee issues, Weimer made four appearances in 2015. After the Spirit's first preseason game this year, Weimer told the media it was her first game without knee pain since 2014.

Weimer, along with two other NWSL players, lost belongings in a major house fire recently. You can donate here.
