Australian Spirit: W-League check-in and photo gallery

A handful of players connected to the Washington Spirit took part in a Round 3 matchup in Australia's W-League last weekend. Melbourne Victory lived up to their name, besting Canberra United 4-2 on the road.

While there are many NWSL players this season in the W-League, Saturday's matchup featured a core group from the 2014 Spirit roster.

Canberra United (2-1-0) features newly retired from the NWSL Lori Lindsey, who also played for Canberra last season. Spirit goalkeeper Chantel Jones joined Lindsey in Canberra for the 2014 season after playing for Perth in 2013. (Note: Canberra also includes Stephanie Ochs, who played for the Spirit in 2013 before being traded to Houston for 2014.)

This year's Melbourne Victory (2-1-0) features two players from the 2014 Spirit: Midfielder Christine Nairn (in her first W-League season) and forward Lisa De Vanna, a W-League veteran. Other NWSL players for Melbourne: Lauren Barnes and Elli Reed (Seattle) and Stephanie Catley (Portland),

Lindsey scored for Canberra, but it wasn't enough to overcome four goals by Melbourne including one by De Vanna. While Nairn did not score, it was her deft footwork in the penalty area that lead to a made penalty kick and Melbourne's first goal. It was a tough match for Jones and the Canberra defense, but Jones is getting positive reviews in a short amount of time with the squad, including a shutout in Round 2.

Let's take a peak at the action, thanks to photos from Naomi Woodley.
