The SheBelieves Cup returns this week for its second edition. This year’s teams are the same as the last, with England, France, and Germany coming to the United States to join the USWNT in competition. These are the first matches that could be called meaningful since Jill Ellis coached the US to a medal-less finish at the Olympics in Brazil, so I’m eager to see whether things will be any different against the 5th, 3rd, and 2nd ranked teams in the world.
The 23-player roster that Ellis has assembled for this tournament features many recognizable players such as Ali Krieger, Christen Press, Becky Sauerbrunn, Crystal Dunn, and Alex Morgan. More notable is the inclusion of young players like goalkeeper Jane Campbell, midfielder and number one overall draft pick in the 2017 NWSL Draft Rose Lavelle, and 16-year-old midfielder Brianna Pinto. Whether the players new to the stage get significant, or even any playing time remains to be seen, but their presence alone is important because they’re fresh faces and potentially the future of the team.
