Do you remember that the United States is not going play in this summer’s World Cup? You probably remember. That doesn’t mean they’re shutting it down for the summer, though, and the USMNT is in Europe today to play the Republic of Ireland. Dave Sarachan has assembled another roster heavy on European-based players, with just four of the squad coming from MLS clubs.
Key player: Bill Hamid
Alex Bono got the start a few days ago when the USMNT downed Bolivia 3-0, and now it should be Hamid’s turn. This would help Hamid overcome a game from his past, a 4-1 loss that he once said he’d re-watched “at least 50 times.” It’s also just the right thing to do, as he remains the best goalkeeper in the pool, though that has apparently not mattered at US Soccer for a few years now.
Anyway, putting the grousing aside, this is a chance for Hamid to impress some important groups: both the current and future USMNT coaching staffs, his club bosses at FC Midtjylland (where despite getting a few games he didn’t quite supplant the starter), and European clubs in general. A strong showing here could go a long way for Hamid to progress in his career for both club and country.

What do we have to say about it?: Link to anything we happened to write about the game in question. If we didn’t write anything, skip this section.
What are you drinking?: When this game starts I’ll be at the Plex ahead of the Spirit’s game against Chicago, so probably bottled water in the press box.
