Gregg Berhalter named his first squad for his first camp as the manager of the US Men’s national team, and included two of D.C. United’s stalwarts from the 2018 season. Paul Arriola, with 17 caps to his name, and Russell Canouse, looking to earn his first minutes with the senior team, were named to the group of 27 on Thursday that will take part in a training camp near San Diego, California.
At the conclusion of the camp, the US will play Panama on January 27th, and Costa Rica on February 2nd, with a squad consisted only of players from MLS.
Canouse was actually part of interim manager Dave Sarachan’s camp last January, but did not see any playing time with the national team, and then picked up an injury that kept him sidelined until mid-July. His form after his return seemed to be good enough for a call-up in November, but a numbers crunch seemed to keep him out of the fray for the time being.
Arriola, who played meaningful minutes in last year’s World Cup qualifiers and Gold Cup, made just two appearances for the Red, White, and Blue in 2018. The winger played against Bosnia during the last January camp, and then went 56 minutes against Brazil in September.
The former Club Tijuana Xolo was all over the place for the Black-and-Red this past season. Arriola started quietly as a winger, but then got shifted towards a central midfield spot, where he became more productive with goals and assists. His two goal performance helped christen Audi Field against the Vancouver Whitecaps in July, but by the end of the season, Arriola was playing more and more minutes as a right back, filling in for a rash of injuries at the position.
Bill Hamid, who played well after returning from Denmark on loan in August, was not part of the squad.
