Tonight's game against Guatemala is the one and only warm-up for the United States before the Gold Cup gets underway next week. For the US it's an opportunity to test their ability to break down a determined, defensive team. It will be interesting to see which formation Jurgen Klinsmann opts for to deal with this challenge, as he remains unpredictable on that front. Today is also the last chance for players to underline their claims for starting roles outside of training sessions.
USMNT Projected Starting 11: Predicting Klinsmann's formation choice is always hazardous, but I suspect we'll see a diamond midfield today. That means Brad Guzan in goal behind a back four of Brad Evans, Ventura Alvarado, John Brooks, and Timmy Chandler. In the midfield, Kyle Beckerman will play the deep role with Alejandro Bedoya on the right and Mix Diskerud on the left. Michael Bradley will take the attacking midfield job. Up front, look for Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore to pair up.
Match previews: USSoccer.com's preview looks back at the USMNT's history in Nashville, while Stars and Stripes FC has several questions they want answered in this game. Over at MLSsoccer.com, Charles Boehm talked to Klinsmann about his expectations for tonight and for the Gold Cup as a whole.
What are you drinking: Probably Evan Williams Single Barrel over two cubes. Nice way to unwind after a long week, and Single Barrel is a bourbon that delivers a lot more than its price point indicates.
Prediction: I should hope the US can break through Guatemala's attempts to congest the field and pack their defense. Otherwise, this Gold Cup will be short chronologically while feeling very long. I'll take 3-0 USA, with Dempsey, Bradley, and Gyasi Zardes scoring.
