Throwback Thursday: Watch the USA beat Portugal in the 2002 World Cup

It was basically the Costa Rica beating Uruguay of the early aughts.

Nobody saw it coming, and that's part of what made it so special. Portugal, then, as now, rated by FIFA as one of the five best teams in the world came into the Suwon World Cup Stadium heavy favorites. They left with nothing, losing to the United States 3-2 after going down 3-0 in the first half before crashing out of the group stage entirely. John O'Brien and Brian McBride would become legends that day in South Korea, and we saw that Landon Donovan truly was the future of American soccer - even if he is now in the past.

I remember waking up incredibly early for so many games in the 2002 cup, but the specifics are all a bit of a blur. Maybe your memory is sharper than mine, though. Where were you when the USMNT shocked the world in 2002? And where will you be when they play Portugal this Sunday?
