After what seems like forever, D.C. United managing partner Erick Thohir seems set to finalize his purchase of Inter Milan from Massimo Moratti as early as next week. The terms of the deal have fluctuated wildly throughout the course of those negotiations, but at this moment it seems that Thohir will be purchasing 70% of the team for €300 million, with Moratti keeping an minority ownership. The first rumors of this pursuit came in May, meaning that it has taken over four months for the sides to hash out the details regarding this purchase. Another associated rumor is that Thohir will use this purchase to send some young Inter players to D.C. United so that they can get playing time and continue to develop.
This purchase would make Thohir one of four owners of MLS teams who also own teams in other leagues. Red Bull owns the MetroStars as well as teams in Austria, Germany, and Brazil; Jorge Vergara owns both Chivas USA and C.D. Guadalajara; and Stan Kroenke owns the Colorado Rapids and Arsenal.
