Cake or Death? Carlos Ruiz sleeps with the fishes

With the 2013 season finally, mercifully behind us, it's time to run through the D.C. United roster and determine who should stay and eat cake and who should leave the team and find inevitable death. Today, we look at the short tenure of Carlos "el Pescadito" Ruiz.

USA TODAY Sports

More than anybody else on D.C. United in 2013 - even more than DeRo - Carlos Ruiz was willing to try stuff. Keeper's a yard off his line? Launch something at goal from 40+ yards. Making a run and service is behind you? Pull a bike out of nowhere or try a scissor kick. Even more than DeRo, though, el Pescadito's varied attempts at the spectacular were unlikely to ever produce anything on the scoresheet, as he went the entire league schedule only making 13 appearances in league play and scoring a grand total of zero goals.

Not exactly what you want from a striker, even one you're taking a flier on very late in the preseason. Which is probably why United have already announced they won't be exercising their option for another year on Ruiz's contract, and the Guatemalan won't be returning to the Black-and-Red come 2014.

Nevertheless, this is Cake or Death, and we, the B&RU community, must decide whether the team made the right call or whether we think there should have been room for Ruiz on next year's roster. If you think the Little Fish should have been kept around for 2014, then vote for cake - otherwise, death.

And, of course, once you've voted, share your thoughts on the 2013 Carlos Ruiz experiment down in the comments.
