Well, this is awkward. We started our little Cake or Death series back on the first day of the offseason, before any roster cuts had been made. Today, we encounter what was inevitable really: voting on the fate of somebody who's already been let go. Of course, the result of this vote was all but a foregone conclusion, as was the decision to let this player go. Today, we discuss Lionard Pajoy. And we're basically going to pretend like he hasn't already been thanked for his service and unceremoniously shipped off - so that we can do it ourselves.
In his year-and-a-half in Black-and-Red, Lio was has been a bit of a lightning rod among fans. There were those ready to condemn him the moment he arrived in a trade for Danny Cruz in mid-2012. But he would go on to play a big role in D.C. United's stretch run that year, popping up to score big goals and make key passes at critical moments. But, he wasn't able to provide the sizzle that Maicon Santos and Hamdi Salihi had teased us with earlier that year, and in the end it was his failure to finish chances and his turnovers that defined him for many fans. In 2013, he was basically useless, running aimlessly instead of with purpose and mostly ending up offside exactly when he shouldn't be.
But where should he have fit into the club's 2014 plans? If you think there should have been be room on the roster for #26, then vote to give him Cake. If not, then Death. And once you've voted, stick around and share your thoughts on the departed enigmatic Mr. Pajoy down in the comments.
