MLS Power Rankings, Week 3: Frisco firepower

New, 5 comments

Dallas continues their hot streak and have taken the top spot in this week's power rankings. Will the rest of the league decide to start playing and catch up?

Week 3 of the MLS season is in the books, and this week's power rankings brings with it a lot of movement among the teams in the league.  We've seen some teams start their ascent towards the top of the pack while others are in a freefall.  And still, there's quite a few teams in the league that really don't know if they're going to rise up or fall back.

ESPN's Taylor Twellman suggested at halftime of the D.C. United-New York Red Bulls match Sunday afternoon that several teams in MLS are showing a lack of urgency.  Judging from some of the results this past weekend, Twellman may be onto something, with a total of 10 goals scored in the 8 games played.  Only 7 teams scored a goal, and fans in 3 stadiums didn't see a single ball hit the back of the net over the course of 90 minutes.  This wasn't a good weekend for fans of goals in MLS, and hopefully this isn't a sign that teams will sit back and be content with draws instead of going for 3 points.

In the end, we have a new team at the top, and if you've been watching the games, it should come as no surprise: FC Dallas.  They're the only perfect team left with a 3-0-0 record (9 points) and so far they're the team that's showing the most.  On the other end, we have a new bottom feeder, the only team left that hasn't earned a point so far: the Chicago Fire.  There could be more movement coming this weekend, with all 20 MLS teams in action during a FIFA international fixture window.  With several of the league's star players playing for their national teams this weekend, it's a chance for teams to make some moves up the charts or show that their team is just as good (or bad) without their main talent in the starting XI.

Who's your number one team?  Is United ranked too high, too low or just right?  What outliers do you see?  Hit the comments and let us know what you think.
