MLS Power Rankings, Week 2: The East strikes back

Houston, Toronto, and Kansas City have something to say about the West's dominance.

Bob Levey

Another week in the books means another set of data points for our MLS Power Rankings. In this week's edition, we have the Eastern Conference occupying three of the top four spots as well as six of the bottom six spots. Houston, Toronto, and Kansas City were all expected to be among the top of the East; can they build on these early weeks and pull away?

Rank LW Team Points Games played Comment
1 6 Houston Dynamo 6 2 Beating up on the East will be enough to keep them in the Supporters Shield race
2 7 Toronto FC 3 1 This could be really scary, guys
3 1 Real Salt Lake 4 2 Their normally solid defense looked shaky, but it was against the Goonies
4 5 Sporting Kansas City 1 2 Only tied during in the league, but a win in the CCL moves them up
5 3 Seattle Sounders 3 2 Inventing being bulldozed by TFC?
6 4 LA Galaxy 0 1 Just like SKC, except they didn't get to beat up on DC to improve their standing
7 2 Portland Timbers 2 2 Don't look now, but Portland has two draws against the bottom of the East
8 13 Chivas USA 4 2 Impressive playing with 10 men for so long against San Jose
9 8 Vancouver Whitecaps 4 2 Got the point, but looked terrible in doing so against Chivas
10 9 FC Dallas 4 2 If they were in the East, this would be a playoff team
11 15 San Jose Earthquakes 1 1 A win in the CCL and 3 goals against RSL moves them up
12 12 Philadelphia Union 4 2 You don't get much credit for beating New England right now
13 10 Colorado Rapids 1 1 After appointing their head coach the day before the season, they might take awhile to gel.
14 14 Columbus Crew 3 1 Still don't know how they'll fare against a good team.
15 11 New York Red Bulls 1 2 I fully expect the Red Bulls to turn it around, but they've looked uninspired so far
16 17 Chicago Fire 1 2 Their loss against Chivas isn't looking quite as bad now
17 16 Montreal Impact 0 2 And now we reach the dregs of the East, with Montreal looking just as old as they are.
18 18 New England Revolution 0 2 The Revs, however, were not expected to be this bad. Curse of the Agudelo?
19 19 D.C. United 0 1 No game means no chance to improve.
