MLS Power Rankings, Week 1: The Western Conference is really good

We now inaugurate our weekly power rankings, and in this edition the Western Conference in running rampant.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Our power rankings were monthly throughout the offseason; now that the regular season is here, they are now weekly. Every Tuesday, I will give you all my rank of the 19 MLS teams from best to worst, and you will tell me why I am wrong, who should be higher or lower, and in what order you would put the teams. Then, at the end of every month, I will throw it to you, our readers, to create your own ranking for the site this week using one of our crowdranking tools. But without further ado, here are our power rankings:

Rank Team Points Games played Comment
1 Real Salt Lake 3 1 Two losses to D.C. United last year aside, they start up right where they left off.
2 Portland Timbers 1 1 Never good to drop points at home.
3 Seattle Sounders 3 1 On a team with Obafemi Martins, Clint Dempsey, and Kenny Cooper, Chad Barrett scores the winning goal?
4 LA Galaxy 0 1 Despite their opening loss, I can't ding the Galaxy too much.
5 Sporting Kansas City 0 1 The Sporks rested a number of starters against Seattle and still almost won.
6 Houston Dynamo 3 1 Is this the year the Dynamo finally figure out the regular season?
7 Toronto FC 0 0 No data yet by which to judge, but I'm still cautious on TFC.
8 Vancouver Whitecaps 3 1 Who needs Camilo anyways?
9 FC Dallas 3 1 My fantasy team thanks you, Blas Perez.
10 Colorado Rapids 0 0 If they were in the Eastern Conference, a playoff berth would be assured.
11 New York Red Bulls 0 1 This offseason they followed the same plan as United in 2012; will it have the same result?
12 Philadelphia Union 1 1 There is potential here, but it has yet to come together.
13 Chivas USA 3 1 Even the Goats are joing the "Beat up on the East" party.
14 Columbus Crew 3 1 We will see how good they actually are against other teams.
15 San Jose Earthquakes 0 0 I like their starting 11, but they are paper thin.
16 Montreal Impact 0 1 Their collapse last year leaves me wary.
17 Chicago Fire 0 1 Lower than Montreal because their 3-2 loss was to Chivas.
18 New England Revolution 0 1 Sad Jose Goncalves+No Agudelo=Getting thrashed by the Dynamo.
19 D.C. United 0 1 You had to expect this.
