Fantasy Focus: Victor Bernardez? Victor Bernardez!

An unexpected points leader shoots to the top of the scoring list

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

With D.C. United on bye, Fantasy Focus takes a more enjoyable tone this week. York River AFC led scorers this week with 80 points. Will Bruin (HOU, $8.3) wore the armband and scored 14 points, contributing a goal. Backing him up with 11 points each were Matt Hedges (DAL, $8.5) and Joao Plata (RSL, $7.2), who each scored a goal, and Plata added an assist. Our new overall leader is In It Toux Wynne It, with 167 points.

Positional Leaders

Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall ($6.0) led the keepers with 9 points on the strength of a clean sheet. With his own clean sheet, Zac MacMath (PHI, $5.0) scored 8 points, and Chris Seitz (DAL, $5.0) rounds out the best three with 6 points.

Victor Bernardez (SJ, $8.5) scored two goals and added an assist in their comeback draw against RSL, leading all defenders and all players with 18 points. No other player had more than 13. Matt Hedges's 11 points were good for second among defenders, and the trio of Raymon Gaddis (PHI, $7.0), Amobi Okugo (PHI, $9.0), and Aurelien Collin (SKC, $10.0) tied for third with 8 points - Collin with a goal, and Gaddis and Okugo with clean sheets.

Bernardez's Earthquakes teammate Shea Salinas ($7.5) set the pace for midfielders with 11 points with two assists. Just behind him were Sebastien Le Toux (PHI, $8.5) and Kyle Beckerman (RSL, $9.6), each of whom scored goals.

Jermain Defoe (TOR, $10.5) made his MLS debut and scored two goals for 13 points, leading all forwards. Joao Plata's 11 points were good for second, and Thierry Henry (NY, $11.0) scored a goal and 9 points.

Looking Ahead

Many of the high scoring teams have relied on Dynamo players, but this week they'll have to find substitutes because Houston's on bye, and they're the only such team. A sleeper pick at goalkeeper this week is David Ousted (VAN, $5.5, 8 points), who is on the road facing a punchless Revolution this week (0 goals for, 5 against.) I like Josh Williams (CLB, $8.5) in defense at home against Philadelphia, and Mauro Rosales (CHV, $7.7, 19 points), who has three assists in two games and is the co-leading scorer for midfielders so far, away at Dallas. Will Bruin can't score this week, so look up Gaston Fernandez (POR, $8.1), he of two goals and 18 points in two games, away at Colorado.

Everyone's Adding: GK - Nick Rimando (RSL, $6.1, 19 points, +176), D - David Horst (HOU, $5.7, 15 points, +555), M - Leonardo Fernandes (PHI, $4.5, 8 points, +698), F - Jermain Defoe (+1514)

Everyone's Dropping: GK - Tally Hall (-143), D - Zach Loyd (DAL, $5.4, 0 points, -456), M - Javier Morales (RSL, $10.9, 3 points, -334), F - Mike Magee (CHI, $10.4, 0 points, -629)
