Week 4 is in the book, and we have a new overall leader in the league, as well as a new addition to the weekly leader list. Allie's Awesome Team scored 77 points, with midfielder Patrice Bernier (MTL, $8.0M) leading scoring with 18 points as captain, followed by defenders Josh Williams (CLB, $5.3M) and Matt Hedges (DAL, $5.0M) who scored 9 each. Allie's Awesome Team is 9th overall with 246 points, just 22 behind the new overall leader, DCU4Lifers SC who have 268 points.
Positional Leaders
Goalkeepers
Three goalkeepers tied for the week's lead with 9 points -- Troy Perkins (MTL, $5.2M,) Carlo Cudicini (LA, $5.5M,) and Matt Reis (NE, $5.0M.) D.C. United's Bill Hamid was worth just three points.
Defenders
There were five defenders who shared the points lead this week. Like the goalkeepers, each scored 9 points -- Josh Williams, Matt Hedges, Jose Goncalves (NE, $5.5M,) Aurelien Collin (SKC, $6.0M,) and Ike Opara (SKC $4.8M.) DCU's defenders scored 10 points combined, with Chris Korb ($4.6M) and Daniel Woolard ($4.1M) scoring 3 each, and James Riley ($5.0M) and Brandon McDonald ($5.7M) scoring 2 each.
Midfielders
FC Dallas midfielder Jackson ($7.5M) led all midfielders with 13 points with the help of a goal and an assist. Edgar Mejia (CHV, $7.0M) also contributed a goal and an assist, and rang up 12 points. Meanwhile for DCU, Chris Pontius ($8.5M) assisted Rafael's wonder goal on the way to 7 points.
Forwards
The highest scoring forwards waited until Sunday to play. Juan Agudelo ($8.1M) put in a goal as part of the Chivas deluge in Chicago on his way to 10 points, leading all forwards. On the other side, Sherjill McDonald ($6.5) scored Chicago's only goal, helping him to 8 points. Rafael ($7.7M) was the joint 3rd highest scoring forward with 7 points.
Next week, three teams are on bye -- Chicago, Columbus, and D.C. United -- which are likely to create large roster holes, especially in this league. Who should fill them? I can't believe I'm saying this, but Troy Perkins (26 points) is the 2nd highest scoring goalkeeper behind Hamid. He and the Impact defense have two clean sheets in four matches and have allowed just two goals. If you have leading defender Josh Williams (29 points), you can spend less than his value to buy Dallas defender Matt Hedges (if you weren't listening last week -- $5.0M, 24 points.) Skipping ahead to forwards, Columbus man Federico Higuain ($9.5M) leads the position in scoring overall with 26 points. Consider surprise 2nd and 3rd leading forwards Juan Agudelo (22 points, 2 goals in 3 games) and Robert Earnshaw (TOR, $7.7M, 21 points, 3 goals in 2 games) as less expensive alternatives.
