D.C. United re-sign Kofi Opare to a multi-year contract

D.C. United are looking towards their future, locking down Kofi Opare to a multi-year contract.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

On a day in which he is very likely to start a CCL game, D.C. United announced that they had re-signed center back Kofi Opare to a multi-year contract. After being acquired mid-season last year, Opare has been a staple in the Concacaf Champions League; the trade to acquire Opare for an allocation order spot that the LA Galaxy were never able to use remains one of the most lop-sided trades in recent memory. This year, Opare stepped up when Steve Birnbaum was injured and performed admirably in his absence.

Have an experienced backup center back is always a valuable commodity, and, given the virtue of Bobby Boswell's age, I would assume that Opare will have a chance to challenge for a starting spot next year. A pairing of Opare and Steve Birnbaum is a long-term future that could serve United well, and making sure that partnership will have a chance to happen is a good move for United. See United's new re-signing in action later tonight!
