Even with all of the World Cup games today, some leagues must continue to play throughout. And in USL PRO, the Wilmington Hammerheads travel to Richmond to take on the Kickers. Both teams have only lost one game so far this season, but the Kickers have four games in hand over the Hammerheads. Of note will be how many D.C. United players Ben Olsen sends to Richmond to keep sharp during this World Cup break, especially with many of the players that are normally sent to Richmond likely to start on Tuesday against the Rochester Rhinos. So put this game on your computer while watching the World Cup on your TV, and watch D.C. United's young players.
Time: 7:00 PM EDT
Venue: City Stadium, Richmond, Va.
Streaming: As with all USL PRO games this season, this game will be streamed on YouTube.
D.C. United players in attendance: With a short turnaround between this game and United's US Open Cup game, I do not think that many players will be there. Joe Willis and Christiano Francois, since they are cup-tied to the Kickers, but probably not much more than that.
Projected starting XI: The re-signing of 2013 Rookie of the Year Nate Robinson is a boost to this team, especially down the stretch. However, having just signed this week, I doubt that he will start. Joe Willis will start in goal, with Alex Lee, William Yomby, Henry Kalungi, and Sascha Goerres in front of him. Defensive midfield will be Samuel Asante and Mike Callahan, with Shay Spitz, George Davis IV, and Jason Yeisley in attacking midfield. Matthew Delicate will start up top.
Prediction: The Kickers are currently on a 10-game unbeaten streak, which has propelled them into the top tier of USL PRO. And while Wilmington are a dangerous opponent, I think the home-field advantage will take Richmond to a 2-1 victory over the Hammerheads.
What are you drinking? Obviously nothing in the press box, but probably a Devil's Backbone Catty Wompus when I get back for the late World Cup game.
As always, this is your place for pre-game, in-game and post-game talk.
