Well with the holiday and international break things are light on local soccer, but it’s not like stuff didn’t happen, so let’s go for it.
USA 1-1 Canada - a disappointing result as the Americans fail to win at home (SSFC): Seems not good? WaPo with more, Waking the Red with the Canada side. But having a normal disappointing soccer match paled in comparison:
Brazil v. Argentina’s suspended match was BONKERS, and two Tottenham players were caught in the middle (CFC): Putting aside the Spurs connection, this happened on Sunday as well. But wait! That was not even the most surreal thing around a World Cup Qualifier!
Guinea-Morocco World Cup qualifier postponed after Conakry coup d’etat (ESPN): This. This was the most surreal part (Morocco got back safely, for what it’s worth).
Oh, in terms of D.C. United connections to Sunday’s games, Junior Moreno played 90 and Edison Flores started and played 61 in Peru’s 1-0 win over Venezuela. Andy Najar was held out of Honduras’ scoreless draw with El Salvador, and Erik Sorga started and played 76 in Estonia’s 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland.
Portland Thorns vs. Washington Spirit called off due to Covid-19 positive tests (us): Not great! WaPo and Stumptown Footy with more.
Recap: Loudoun draws 1-1 with Rio Grande (us): Griffin Yow was OK as was Jovanny Bolivar, Kimarni Smith was pretty good!
¿Pega la vuelta? Wanchope Ábila es pretendido por un equipo argentino (Bolavip): So Ramon Abila is the subject of some attention by the President of Huracan, where “Wanchope” scored 40 goals in 85 games, and helped Los Queremos to Copa Argentina and Supercopa titles in 2013-14. He seems to be modest in his claims, and Abila is still a player that Boca Juniors loaned, so lots of hurdles for that to happen.
That’s about all I have. Try to take things easy today.
