Italy advances to Euro 2020 final, Argentina books trip to Copa America final, and more: Freedom Kicks for July 7, 2021

Happy Wednesday, folks. First off, D.C. United will be competing tonight in the recently announced Capital Cup against LD Alajuelense. One note: Liga MX side Puebla is no longer in the friendly tournament due to a Covid outbreak.

Italy beats Spain in a penalty shootout to advance to the Euro 2020 final. They’ll meet the winner of England-Denmark, which takes place this afternoon. Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel was asked about England thinking that Euros was coming home and he had an epicly true answer:

In a theme of the big matches from yesterday, Argentina beat Colombia on penalties to advance to the Copa America final. They will take on Brazil on Saturday, while Colombia will meet Peru in the 3rd place match on Friday.

In the Gold Cup, we learned the 3 teams that will join the rest of the field in the group stage. The only match that didn’t need penalties to decide was Haiti beating Bermuda. Haiti joins the USMNT, Canada, and Martinique in Group B.

Trinidad & Tobago beat French Guiana on penalties to advance, while Guadeloupe beat Guatemala in an epic shootout that went 12 rounds, with both goalkeepers making their spot kicks.

Top young-player performances of Week 11 - MLS

Kevin Paredes and Griffin Yow both make the list of top young performances in MLS for D.C. United.

Speaking of the young’uns, Kevin Paredes and Moses Nyeman were called in to train with the USMNT, joining Paul Arriola and Donovan Pines, who are on the 23-man roster. This prompted a proud congratulatory message from Bill Hamid, who should have been on the roster:
