D.C. United preseason starts, Arriola tweet controversy & more: Freedom Kicks for 3/8/21

Pro soccer gets preseason going

Jason Anderson

Hey there, so I guess preseason starts today? Between that and a preseason conference call with Ryan Martin on the Loudoun side, things appear to be getting busy!

D.C. United to open camp with a new coach and an unsettled roster (WaPo): Roster should come out today so things will fill out a little more, so we’ll see.

D.C. United’s Paul Arriola apologizes for tweets he posted in 2012, when he was 17 (WaPo): In sum, the stuff that occurred on Saturday with Paul, which popped up a couple of days before that.

Speaking of D.C. United, an unfortunate update on Lucas Rodriguez:

While there’s no update on his health past missing Sunday’s game, I’d imagine his abductor will be pesky even if he does come to D.C.

Conmebol suspends March World Cup qualifiers due to COVID-19 pandemic (MLS): So Edison Flores, Junior Moreno, and maybe Yordy Reyna don’t have to leave preseason then, yay!

Washington Spirit notebook: Preseason game at Audi Field vs. Sky Blue FC, plus injury updates and more (us): Jason does a good job at recapping the first DMV soccer team back to work.

Michael Gamble: MLS memories, Chilean football and Loudoun United (CFB Football): Michael adds more to what he’s about. Loudoun starts preseason Friday.

OK, that’s it for me, this week appears to be nice outside, so go enjoy a lot of it.
