Happy Wednesday everyone, our first one in 2021. Yesterday had a bit of news that had us scrolling through Twitter all day, beginning with the reheating of these rumors:
Short answer: no. Long answer: Absolutely not. Mesut Özil is not coming to D.C. United right now, so don’t believe the latest clickbait rumors.
The United States Men’s National Team and the U-23s are having a joint January Camp. Paul Arriola makes the USMNT roster, while former D.C. United products Eryk Williamson and Byrang Kayo make the U-23 roster.
Best wishes to Alex Morgan and family, who have tested positive for COVID-19. We hope she’s back on the mend soon, but do not expect her to be on the January Camp roster for the USWNT.
An update on the D.C. United coaching search:
Notably, Zorniger was at the helm at RB Leipzig for three years in the mid 2010s. Source tells me that as of now, Seattle assistant Gonzalo Pineda remains “the lead candidate.” #DCU— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) January 5, 2021
it seems more and more unlikely that we have a coach in place by the MLS Superdraft, but let’s see what happens.
Speaking of coaching vacancies...
Greg Vanney, as expected, moves to the LA Galaxy, returning to the club with which he began his playing career.
MLS doesn’t want to cut salaries, but they want to extend the CBA 2 seasons to make up for the financial losses they had last year and that they expect this year. No word on if the MLSPA will go for that.
Some interesting news to keep an eye on ahead of the NWSL Draft next week:
USA U-20 star Trinity Rodman — top women's recruit in the country last year and daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman — is seriously considering turning pro before ever playing for Washington State this spring, three sources tell me. NWSL draft is Jan. 13.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) January 5, 2021
Brian Schmetzer will remain the coach of the Seattle Sounders after agreeing to a new deal with the club he has won two MLS Cups with.
That’s all for today, folks. Stay safe out there.
