See y’all at Buzzard Point tomorrow

Folks, it’s just one day between us and the first D.C. United game of 2020! Which is the first game of the MLS season! And the earliest game on the calendar in MLS history! So naturally it’s going to be windy and in the 30s. Bundle up, folks.

D.C. United versus Colorado Rapids lineup: Starting the year out on the right foot | Black and Red United
Pretty excited to see this lineup go to work in person, not gonna lie.

D.C. United Coach Ben Olsen on Federico Higuain: ‘The fire in his belly is real’ | Washington Post
United hasn’t made it official, but it sounds like we’ll see Federico Higuain around in the very, very near future.

We’ll have a lot more from training later today, but here’s a quick sample from Ben Olsen:

If you’re a YouTube TV user who was going to watch United on WJLA 24/7 that way...well, this sounds like bad news:

Colorado’s Burgundy Boys are back at altitude and ready for MLS season to start | Burgundy Wave
For the first time in years, the Colorado Rapids actually have a little bit of confidence. Saturday should be a pretty good game.

Here’s a look at the new Washington Spirit jersey:

I think it’s blue, but a lot of people are telling me they think it’s gray. We might have another optical trick like “the dress.”

Three thoughts from LAFC’s 3-0 win over Club León | Angels on Parade
No way around it: LAFC was absolutely brilliant in coming back from 2-0 down to defeat Club León and advance in the CCL. That is, a preseason LAFC starting a back-up caliber right back and a fourth-string center back tore a Liga MX side, that hadn’t lost by multiple goals in over 50 games, to shreds.

Sounders vs Olimpia, full-time: Seattle goes down on penalties | Sounder at Heart
Somehow, the only MLS team to slip up is the Seattle Sounders, who were facing an Olimpia team that, with all due respect, is not much different from last year’s FC Cincinnati in terms of overall talent.

NWSL Hires Lisa Baird as New Commissioner | Sports Illustrated
After three long years, the NWSL has named Lisa Baird as commissioner. First impressions? Sounds like she’s got a good resume for what the league needs right now.

Here’s the official announcement.

NWSL finally has a new commissioner | All for XI
It’ll be important for the NWSL to staff up, because a commissioner isn’t all that they need to make the progress as a league that individual clubs have already started to make on their own.

State of the Fire: Assembled in a hurry, a new-look team could take time to gel | The Athletic
So about the Chicago Fire: they’re probably gonna be bad at soccer this year. They seem to get that now, but we’ll see how things are looking when we’re in the thick of summer.

Nobody Has Experienced MLS Quite Like Kyle Beckerman | Sports Illustrated
Shout out to my fellow Crofton...ite? Croftonian? I don’t know our demonym, but whatever. Kyle Beckerman starts his 21st MLS season this year, and that fact by itself is wild.

OK folks, that’s it from me. It’s gameday tomorrow!
