FIFA’s best, the NWSL’s future, and more: Freedom Kicks for 9/24/19

be the person Megan Rapinoe wants you to be

Goooood morning, folks. Yesterday I experienced that special disappointment that comes with expecting a package to arrive but not actually receiving it. Alas. I shall assemble my new shelving unit tonight (hopefully!).

Anyway, let’s dive into the soccer things.

Seven Sounders fans assaulted after D.C. game | ESPN

Er, so, I actually saw some of this altercation. I don’t really have critical information to share, but I will say it definitely did not happen after 11 p.m. as this article says. Regardless, I was in a car and we were just driving past; we told the nearest cop/stadium personnel/uniformed person directing traffic, they were already on the radio about it, and we left. This has been your exclusive eye-witness account. (Also, don’t get into fist fights over soccer? Wtf. I hope those assaulted heal up quickly.)

Washington Spirit’s Rose Lavelle named to 2019 FIFPro World XI | B&RU

YEAH CUZ SHE’S AWESOME. Other USWNT players in the XI: Kelley O’Hara, Julie Ertz, Megan Rapinoe, and Alex Morgan. OK, so they’re all awesome.

Can the NWSL stand on its own without U.S. Soccer’s management? An answer may be imminent | Yahoo! Sports

come on NWSL you got this I believe in you you’re gonna crush it

“Any punishment would almost certainly include Russia’s ban from next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, but it could extend to competitions in any sport whose governing body is a signer of WADA’s doping code, including soccer’s World Cup, track and field’s world championships and dozens of other sporting events.” Yikes. Awkward.

And I leave you there, friends. Have a great day!
