Now that the flurry of D.C. United deals are over, we cast our eyes back upon the field and try and figure out what the team will do with the players it currently has. Ben Olsen will also have to contend with the injuries to Chris Durkin and Russell Canouse and the suspension of Junior Moreno against the LA Galaxy, so a formation change is well within the cards.
I think that Olsen should go with a 4-1-4-1, a formation that the team has used in years past but not this year so far. This setup will allow Olsen to get his players players into positions in which they are comfortable and hopefully give the attack some zip to compete against Zlatan and the rest of the Galaxy.
This formation starts off with the back line of Leo Jara, Frederic Brillant, Steven Birnbaum, and Joseph Mora. Donovan Pines has struggled the past couple of games on the back line, so it makes sense to not start him here and not put United into a 3 back lineup. In front of all them will be Felipe, making his debut for United mere days after being traded to the team. If Olsen wanted to do a 4-2-3-1, he could pair Leo Jara with Felipe and bring in Chris Odoi-Atsem on the back line, but I think this lineup maximizes United’s current players.
In the midfield, United can play Titi Rodriguez, Luciano Acosta, Wayne Rooney, and Paul Arriola, all underneath another new signing: Ola Kamara. That is a powerful front five with all of the players in comfortable positions and it should be able to go toe-to-toe with the Galaxy.
What do you want to see Ben Olsen do against the LA Galaxy?
