The Washington Spirit make their 2019 World Cup bow today, with Australia duo Chloe Logarzo and Amy Harrison leading off against Italy first thing this morning. They’ll be followed by Cheyna Matthews and Jamaica looking for an upset against Brazil, who will be without injured superstar Marta. Lastly, England will take on Scotland, which is a great chance for the world to get familiar with Scottish midfielder Kim Little.

We start with the Matildas, who will be solid favorites to deal with Italy. However, the Azzure posted 5 shutouts in 8 qualifiers, so despite the odds, they should prove to be a tricky opening opponent for Australia. On the other side, our hopes around here are on Logarzo showing the footwork and invention that has boosted the Spirit midfield, and that the versatile Harrison gets her chance as well.

Recommended reading: The Matildas have major expectations of success, but can they reach them? Our preview has questions about that, while there is also the issue that they’re heavily reliant on Kerr remaining the best player on earth throughout this tournament. Our Italy preview says to keep an eye on Manuela Giugliano.

The day’s second game will see Jamaica make their tournament debut against a vastly experienced Brazil side that nevertheless looks vulnerable. With Marta (the all-time leading scorer in this competition) out injured and a nine-game (!) losing streak heading into the tournament, this game seems ripe to be the tournament’s first big upset.

I’m already on board:

Bets aside, for our purposes it’ll be great to see Cheyna Matthews (a lock to start unless she’s picked up some kind of knock) start up front for Jamaica. That’s their strong suit, even after losing Kayla McCoy to a pre-tournament injury. Matthews and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw are capable of causing any team in the tournament trouble, and if the Reggae Girlz can hold up defensively — a fair question given their inexperience — we just might see them take down Brazil.

Recommended reading: It just so happens that our friend Kim McCauley has written great pieces about both Marta and Shaw in recent times, and I recommend both. We’ve also got previews for As Canarinhas and the Reggae Girlz.

The day finishes up with England vs. Scotland, a pairing that has plenty of people excited simply based on history and the obvious issue of both being in the United Kingdom. From a soccer perspective, though, England is widely considered to be one of the top four teams in this tournament. Scotland, despite having one of the best players on earth in Kim Little, is considered well below that level.

That’s not to say that they’re incapable of making this difficult, though. They should have 5 starters with over 100 caps, and another (Hayley Lauder) who will get her 100th should she play today. On the other side, England is well-established, but perhaps their most exciting players are among their youngest. Look out for Beth Mead and Georgia Stanway, who have been fun enough (and, frankly, good enough) that England fans are calling on Phil Neville to make them full-time starters.

Recommended reading: There are no fewer than 6 of SB Nation’s top 50 players involved in this one. One of them is Fran Kirby, who is one of the biggest question marks in the tournament based on recent form. Our Scotland preview includes an introduction to Erin Cuthbert, while for the Three Lionesses we’re expecting the top spot in this group.
